Value question: '68 S
Okay, I do a lot of matchmaking of sellers & buyers, but mostly '69-73 cars. I have an opportunity to sell a numbers-matching '68 S soft window Targa, and the market is not an easy one to figure out.
Soft window 911s are valuable everywhere. '68 Ss are more valuable in the US, where they were never sold. In Europe, most short wheelbase 911s -- especially Targas -- have rusted away. So I suspect this car is potentially valuable, despite needing roughly $25K in restoration. I just don't know what the market value is for a restored '68 S SWT. Any empirically-based input would be valuable. TIA

w/o more details concerning ownership, documentation etc...
I will venture after a top restoration; $75,000 to $85,000.

There is a non matching 68 SWT (purportedly an S) needing restoration that has been on offer from a dealer in California at $25k for some time. Let me know if you want the link.

I had heard of one going for $90K at Monterey, but these numbers seem surprisingly strong to me... Nevertheless, will do a full assessment of the car over the weekend and see if $25K will really put it right.

I think this car is destined to "nice driver" status; not auction queen. It's a driver now, but to get to "nice driver" the car needs about $12K worth of fixing & fiddling. So now an even tougher question: what's the market value of a "nice driver" '68 S SWT? $45K? $40?
Really appreciate the input!

Tech,
You are right softie's tend to have their own marketplace which is converse to all other targas. They sell for a healthy premium over a coupe. There is a rough 68S coupe (Budge's) currently available here on Pelican for $30,000ish. Here is a beautiful ebay coupe that went recently for $50,000. Yet driver SWB S Targas command a stronger price. Here is one that sold here last year for $55,000....... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/531668-fs-1968-911s-swt.html They have sold into the $150,000 range for "original" cars with documentation. What did The Green (x gallagly) S softie w/ the non-matching but correct S motor sell for? It was beautifuly restored and California Restoration wanted $89,500. They currently have a white car which I believe they wanted $110,000ish when I saw it last year at the Lit show swap meet. Cars - For Sale - Porsche 911 - 1967 Porsche 911S SWT - Light Ivory - California Porsche Restoration These cars have enough room in them to have a "Master" shop restore and get out with a little extra. The Hopkins/Cabel restored car sold for $121,000 in 2007. IMO, a 68S softie, unless parts are missing like motor, trans etc.. will bring a good price. I recommend to sell as is and let the eventual owner complete the restoration. A number of years ago one that was nicely optioned rolling rust sold in the $30,000 range on EBay. Here is another thread that might help; FS: 1967 Porsche 911 S Soft Window Targa Bahama Yellow 64k Orig. Miles

That is exceptionally helpful input. Macroni. I have been struggling with this one, and have gotten two lowball offers, but I think the owner's asking price is spot on in the mid-20s.

eeeerrr, maybe I could insert a point, Luke my numbers matching fresh paint and original body panel '68 S is not currently nor has it ever been offered at 30 ish, sorry won't happen before I withdrew it from the market I considered offers low to mid 40's meaning 45K.
There haven't been alot of SWB '68 S targas marketed lately but Franks beautiful green car does come to mind offered in the '90s IIRC or the signal orange SWB '68L that someone named Rick Cabell or something sold 5 years back at 125k IIRC. There is not a dearth of info on '68 S cars simply beacause they didn't reach our shores in the same quantities as say '67 S or even '69S cars, but then you know that right? On another note I had a few people confuse my numbers matching original interior freshly refinished blood orange '68S for west coast Bert J's non matching ,late interior needing paint '68S maybe because his name is also Bert maybe because his was number +531+ mine *513* real close but I must say no cigar.....Bert R,East Side! Oh and I need to note I received a phone call from a member noting this discussion and that some correcton was in order, thanks for listening

Not sure how a '68S could turn into a '67S...
No, the one I was asking about is sold pending payment but is still in the owner's hands.

LOL. Fully understood! I suspect Rich's car is a little nicer... but there's definitely been a Softie Eruption recently!
BTW, the subject car was officially sold tonight.

Since this thread has run it's course and seems to be filled with people who know a bit about SWT's I'll ask a question. I just saw an ad in the classifieds for a 1970. I thought '69 was the last year for SWT's. Any input on this?

I believe there were a few also built in 1970.
