1971 911T Targa Value

Guys I have come across a 1971 911T Targa. I heard about the car thru a freind. Dont think it is advertised. I am 1000 miles away from it and do not know anyone in the area. What do you think it is worth? He wants me to make an offer. I will get a PPI done before moving ahead, but need make an offer and then a deposit first.

I have spoken to the owner and have some pics of body and int. None of the chassis. The owner has had it for 15 years and is a part of a 15+ car collection. He is selling to reduce his collection and has some muscle cars for sale too. He doesnot seem very mechanically knowledgable. Odo does not work, so miles are unknown. He believes the it is all orginal, paint, int, drivetrain, he is not sure what work was done before he owned it. He says it drives well and was used mostly by his son in the summers. Has had recent brakes, clutch, brake lines, fuel line. No records.
He said it is a good driver, not a show car. In pics, body shows a couple of rust bubbles. He is not sure if org paint or not. I asked about rust on chassis, headlight buckets, battery box, etc and he said he has not looked. Thought there maybe some chassis rust as car is old. He was going to get some pics and send those.
Has an duck tail and RS type front vallance. Do the rear fenders look to have flares added?

Please let me know what you think.

It's not original paint because it does have rear flares and ducktail added and bumper trim removed. It has later mirrors. And that rocker extension is obviously aftermarket.

Chassis pics are essential before you name a price or send a deposit, IMO. This car should be approached as a "project."

Missing interior door pockets, seats have been reupholstered, pedals are either replacements or add ons; speakers in the door panels and gearshift knob and leather boot look like add ons too, not to mention the exterior issues techweenie has already mentioned.

Not sure the owner would be considered a "collector" or a guy with a bunch of old cars.

Look for rust.. Trunk, battery boxes, front pan, longitudinals, rear seat/top of engine compartment too.

Value? ugh.. Potential money pit? yes $7K-20K depending on the fickle buyer/seller dynamic. I'd lean closer to the low end imho.

Thanks guys. I was thinking to offer 7-8k depending on the pics of the floor.

I agree he is not a collector, but a guy that owns a bunch of cars. Not very knowledgable or playing dumb...

Good catch on int stuff.

Not really interest in a project, I want something to look at in the garage and put a couple thousand miles a year on for the next few years until I can afford something better. I might be best to wait for a decent SC for $12 to 13k

Given that it's an early car I would very much assume that it does have rust and needs a fairly thorough inspection, especially as it looks like it's been modified.

Given the "there's at least twice as much rust as you can see" rule of thumb, I'd say that's a project. Especially as it's got rust holes in it.

Sure looks like a project.. I like how the front suspension is barely attached It is a $5-7K car in need of another $15-20K of work (assuming most of the work is DIY).
