Is the whole really worth more than the sum of it's parts?
I picked up a 79 911 SC off of CL from a guy cleaning out his garage to move again. The car is complete except for engine and trans. The VIN is 9119302xxx. I forgot the last few digits. The body is nice except for a driver door damage. It has cloth ReCaros and a perfect dash. It has gold BBS rims with Porsche center caps and a nice whale tale.
The age old question... Is it worth more as a roller or in parts? I have plenty of time to part it and the does look very nice. Any 'rules of thumb' in this domain? Any and all input would be appreciated. |

Parting the car will likely yield a higher total sum, but imagine filling a large barrel one drop at a time and you'll have a sense of what is to come. Also keep in mind that unless you are in an area that has an active Porsche enthusiast community, you have to package and ship every part you sell, which can be a real pain for larger items.

It depends too on the condition of the car - based on your description (without seeing pics) I am going to say that because of what's left of the car is damaged, non original wheels, etc. - it's probably not worth too much.
That said, if you can sell it here, whole, to someone who has a vision for a project, and save it from the crusher, that would be great, wouldn't it? |

Whole it is worth between $5000 and $8000 w/ a fairly quick transaction. Parting would certainly yield more but it is predicated to how you value your time....

I've parted cars. It is a hassle and slow. With a car like the one mentioned, if the purchase price was right, I'd just flip the whole thing to someone who wants to make a racecar for a 15-20$ profit and be done with it.

No drivetrain, dented door, no Fuchs -- you'd be lucky if somebody gave you $5000 n my opinion. More like $3500 in today's market. An SC without the goods that make it an SC has little value as a rebuilder. And with the majority of the fast money in parting an SC coming from the engine, transmission and wheels, you're staring at a long uphill hike to get money out of it.

just a guess, but I think the last guy maximized the value of the car by selling off the drivetrain & Fuchs and selling you the rest.
What Unobtanium said is spot on in terms of it taking a very long time to market, negotiate, pack and ship the remaining parts.

With respect accorded both Tech's and Unob's real time market info. ( they both are very active in the trade.) I have not seen many SC coupes available for $3500.

I've been watching some eBay cars in similar condition / situation and they're struggling to get beyond $4-5k. So nobody may be offering them for $3500, but it's probably fair to say not many people are buying them at more.
Just my opinion, of course!
