Coupe? Targa? Cab?

Lots of variables here ya know (maintenance, upgrades etc).

NADA says (coupe): $18K (low) $22K (Ave) $30K (high)... but doesn't allow you to enter issues like mileage, paint, motor, damage etc.

Might check excellence if you want really high values...

Or do an Ebay/CL search to see what folks are asking for these cars..

They are 25+ years old.. there is no real "formula" for what they are worth.

To me, $12-16K.

Sorry about that, it's a coupe. I'm just curious what I'll pay for sales taxes if I buy this car. They charge taxes based on kelly blue book value in Connecticut.

NADAGuides Classic on line is what I can view, KBB doesn't go back that far on line.
$18,500 low retail to 30,700 High retail.
Take $6K off for private on both ends would be my guess.
That's for the west coast. Your zip may make a difference.

No way you find a decent '85 Carrera ANYWHERE for a private sale of $12.5k. For that kind of money, there is a BUNCH of stuff wrong, or it's a fire sale.

I know. I have looked for the past three years, and I'd say if you can find a 150k Carrera that looks good, runs well, has receipts and passes a PPI, then be glad if you only pay $18.5k.

Low retail represents a car that has issues,"a 20 footer", high retail represents one that is immaculate.
Knowing how the NADA and KBB values are listed regarding condition for low, middle and high pricing helps before calling BS... (I did say Guess for private pricing after all.)

This one is $6k below high retail and is pretty clean with low miles. It's a Targa, but they are priced almost the same as the coupe if not higher in some areas. Not too far from you either I'd guess.

Question to the OP,
Can you challenge the value they establish?
I was able to drop the taxes charged on a used car I bought when I was in WA by bringing in a few E-Bay final sales prices for the same year car.

KBB is crap for older cars, or cars that have low production numbers. Survey what they are being listed at, as well as what they are selling for on Ebay. The Excellence value guide is a good rule of thumb as well.

Where? Targas are always priced lower as they are considered not as desirable..

Even that high-mile one is >$12.5k. Which was my point.

Just checked NADA classic for my '78 SC. zip 97304 for retail sales.
The Coupe is low $16,200 Average $19,700 High $27,200
The Targa is low $16,900 Average $ 20,600 High $28,700

Besides, Targas are only undesireable to those that don't have one...

Why not just call the appropriate taxing agency in Conn and ask how much they will charge you? All the posts above are all over the place.

I just paid 19k for a 1984 euro coupe with 65k miles, sport seats. Its was the best one I had seen in 2 years looking all over. I feel it was a good price.

The latest Excellence Porsche Buyers Guide lists 1984-86 coupes at $19,100-$25,500.
(Cars in average to good condition with no repairs needed.)

I've been trolling ads for 2 years and that seems about right.

It makes no sense to me that a state charges tax based on KBB versus actual price paid. I guess that's their way of trying to crack down on fraud and people declaring cars way lower than they actually paid to avoid paying taxes.

I consider my '85 Carrera with 85k mi on it, nice interior, rebuilt gearbox, no engine leaks and in need of paint a $15k car. I'd sell it for cash today at that price.

My '86 Carrera is immaculate, is a rare colour and has a bunch of special order options, but has 125k mi on it. In today's market I think it's a $20k car.

I bought an '85 Carrera coupe 2 years ago for $9000 -- from a dealer. It had 227K miles, but no issues. Miles make a huge market value difference.
