1975 911 w/ '68 Motor
Local mechanic has a '75 he wants out of his shop. He holds the title. The engine has been rebuilt from a '68--currently the car is on the rack with the motor sitting beside it. Body looks straight, the doors open and close well, glass is perfect. He replaced the front suspension pan, wiring harness (?), shocks, struts, fuel tank. New tires on stock rims, which look perfect.
The interior is not bad at all. Needs headliner. Few cracks in the dash, one large crack in driver's seat, but over all, looks good. ODO read 72k miles. All the chrome trim looks perfect--even around the headlights. Some surface rust on passenger door and it's missing both outer rocker panels (?) below the doors. Surface rust on a few other places, such as the front hood (deck lid?) The undercarriage is solid--I checked with screwdriver. Said the pans have been rust coated. He's a tuner boy. Has no desire to keep the car. Been sitting in the garage for over two years. He said the engine is strong, runs great. Wants to sell with the engine out. I refuse--I want to actually drive the car. I'm looking for a project car. I can get him down to @ $3000 with the engine installed. I plan on doing all the paint stripping, body work and priming and painting myself. Didn't have my camera to take pics. What ya'll think? I was going to go back up there today but it's now snowing.

+1 yes, yes, yes, just the 68 motor is worth that especially if it's aluminum case.
Put on your snowshoes and fill your pockets with cash and get over there before someone else does. Just a thought, if your going to do a bunch of body work maybe the drive train out might be better. Last edited by plumber; 02-02-2013 at 06:57 AM.. |

Thanks, for the replies. Forgot to mention that the rear bumper and deck lid have been replaced. The car is red but the replacement parts are white. So I'm curious if the car has been hit from behind or what.
Also, he said that that engine was magnesium not aluminum, which makes me skeptical of the actual year of the engine. I can also get a completely rusted out (undercarriage only) '70 (with motor that runs) for $300. Yup, three-hundred-buckeroos.

Porsche changed from aluminum to magnesium case midyear 68 so it's probably accurate.
Get the serial# off the vertical fan brace on the right side and we can tell you what type of motor it is. The 70 with the running motor sounds good as well, 2.2 originally maybe use that in the 75 which was a 2.7 originally and sell the 68 to pay for your restoration. Sounds all good if he has clear titles. Post some pictures if you can, good luck. |

The engine from my 68 was removed in Tennessee. Would you mind sharing the engine #?

I'm still on the fence, as it all sounds a bit fishy and I'm getting a bad vibe. But if I go back to see him, I'll write the numbers down and send them your way.

False alarm. Sorry folks. Just talked to the nice young man. He wants three just for the motor. They've already got over $4k in parts and structure invested.
And as far as the 70 goes...no engine, been wrecked (badly), full of bond. Oh well, c'est la vie.

I was going to tell you that you were high for insisting the engine be installed at $3k. If the whole deal was $3k I was going to tell you to buy it, sell the engine for $3k or more and go buy yourself a nice 3.0l 911SC engine and put it into your free chassis...
