Tool kits

I sometimes build hot rods and usually don't include toolkits, but occasionally like to do a straight restoration. I have a '71 that will be back from the paint shop soon, and I'd like to put a tool kit in it. But yikes!

I've recently seen toolkits advertised for more than 'good used' transmissions. They frankly just aren't worth over $2K to me.

Not sure if anyone is really paying that much for toolkits... Jacks, on the other hand, haven't seemed to appreciated in the same way.

my presumption is that you build these cars to often sell after restoration, not necessarily bring to concours events...

if that's the case, i don't think spending $2k on a tool kit will yield you an extra $2k when you go to sell the car. maybe i'm wrong, but that's what i'd guess.

on the other hand, if it's a car you're intending to use at concours events, and need 100% originality, then maybe it's worth it to you to spend the $$$.

bottom line: i'm not sure a few plastic trophies are worth $2k to me.

When I was at Carquip we were regularly selling single 356 screwdrivers for $300-500. Whole kits were easily in that $2k range.

I haven't followed early 911 kits but know they've been going up. Given the current market it wouldn't surprise me one bit if those were selling prices these days.

There is a SWB tool kit in claimed "concours" condition in the Marketplace for $2200.

I think someone could make a decent living doing nothing but buying & selling old car tool kits. You know these old hoarder guys have tons of old car tools stashed away in old tackle boxes and such.

Maybe that is a new reality show niche: Tool Diggers.

Yeah, I guess I qualify, since I have a handful of open end wrenches from Porsche toolkits I use all the time... :-0

Maybe I'm rich and don't know it!

I shall become... The Toolkit Whisperer!

Hmmm. Perhaps "Tool Bags"?

Cheers

That's ridiculous. I like the guy who wanted to confirm the $44.99 shipping price on a $24,000 tool set in the Questions at the bottom of the auction.

There's actually a couple of guys who do. Have you seen what an old tire gauge sells for? Or the spare pump?

One of them also makes repro carry bags.

That whole concours world is an alien universe to me.

Not sure it makes the car worth $2k more but I do believe it makes the top prices come more easily and not just for the concour crowd.

It's mind-blowingly absurd in my eyes, but still very awesome. Not for me though.

I was offered near $500 for my complete 930 tool kit recently. I'm keeping it, that spark plug tool is priceless!

Suprised it was that cheap.

I need one for my '88 Carrera. I don't care about concours -- I just need a fan pulley tool!

The rest is just window dressing, but if I am going to spring for $40, I am going to buy a whole kit. I just need to rebuild my car kitty after blowing the bank on my reseal.

tool kit

I just bought a brand new one from Porsche, for Techeenie's old 1973.5T .

Not perfect concourse, but cost just $240 and is very presentable.
