1988 Carrera with 41K miles
Looked at a car this weekend and I'm really on the fence about this one, so I thought I'd see what you guys say. It's a 1988 Carrera 911 with 41,000 original miles (supported by CarFax). Original black paint with original black interior, both look good with little wear. No rust. A previous owner modified the car though - 993 Turbo brakes, full coil-over suspension, and the engine was torn down by a reputable builder and rebuilt as a 3.3L turbo with the G50 transmission, Carrera intake manifolds, IC, and EFI with a stand alone engine management system. There's not too much bad about the car except it's a narrow body with a big turbo tea tray wing to fit the IC, the engine is leaking a lot of oil, and the clutch is shot.
What do you think a turbo conversion like this is worth? Kirk |

Is it being represented as a track car or street car. Look for signs of a roll bar that has been removed. How do you intend to use it?

for me...I wouldn't pay more than whatever a stock 88 is worth.
The interesting twist would be how much all those parts are worth and if he has the original stuff. If he were to have all the original parts and you could bring it back to stock at some point..selling the non-OE parts you could mitigate your investment. With all of that being said I still dont think its worth more than a 40k 88 911. $29k? |

It's hard to really give you a solid opinion...
I'd argue that after purchase, you're going to have to sink in a considerable amount of money - maybe $10k to address the clutch and oil leaks... maybe less, maybe more, but the point here is to be conservative on your estimate so you don't get burned. The low mileage is definitely a plus, but I think you'd be crazy to pay high $20s for a car that needs immediate work. I'd start in the upper teens and truthfully, I would be hesitant past the $22k mark. There likely won't be a premium in the car's value being modified, and a stock '88 with 41k miles needing an overhaul would be a half-decent value at $32k (22 + 10) |
