Hagerty values for G50 Carreras

The Hagerty web site valuation tool lists the value of a 1987 911 for 4 conditions. The values for conditions 1 through 3 seems to agree with the cars for sale online. The chart below is for a Targa but the values for coupes are similar.

Do condition 4 cars really exist for $12,000?
Where can I find a condition 4 car?
What is the bottom price for a running G50 without major body damage?

Please exclude rust from the discussion, but even the rusty ones are selling for more.

Hagerty

Thanks for any input.
Mike

Based on the description I'd say that most cars running out there are "4"s or a bit better. They're not going for $12,000. They're getting shipped off to Europe for a lot more than that.

I agree with KNS -- think that description of a "Condition 4" is too nitpicky for an old, original car, and focuses too much on cosmetics to the exclusion of mechanical condition,

I bet most regularly driven 911s have a few pant chips, a door ding, and a nick/chip in the windshield.

Cracked dash, aftermarket wheels, collision damage, needing repaint seem to be appropriate steps from 3 to 4.

For a complete, running car with good body panels -- $12k for a G50 is approaching "part out" price. Even selling the engine & transmission for "core" values would cover more than half of that. 2/3 if they are in good working condition.

And that tells me the Condition 4 value is probably 3-5k too low.

COLB - I agree with you.

I have been looking for a G50 Carrera 'core' for over a year now, and it seems like the bottom is ~ $16k. I would like to find one of these $12k cars, since I plan of reconditioning everything anyway.

That price is 7 years old. I saw them going in ratty shape for this price in So Cal 7 years ago.

$12k they do exist, but only come up every few months.
If you're willing to go to $15k, you will see more examples in better shape.

Yup and if you're willing to stretch your budget to 17k you can get an 87-89 930. Just have to be patient. I see one about every three months.

Never say never, but condition 4 (as described by Hagerty) $12k G50 cars are so few as to be irrelevant. If it is for retail sale for $12k, it has something extraordinarily wrong with it -- like a salvage title, extensive damage, or is in non-op condition.

These are Hagerty values, which are intended to describe the average market, not the exceptional car that grandma sells not knowing what it is worth.

Not sure if you are being facetious, but I'd love to see a link to any 930 selling for 17k. Maybe you are trolling the troll.

Correct. At this point its obvious everything he says is just to get a rise.

$17k for a 5 speed 930 - is it on fire or under water?

I have reached the conclusion that there is no market for condition 4, because a market implies that cars are available for a price. It seems to me that the bottom is condition 3 at $16k. I have seen cars at this price, but they sell fast.

He's kidding. I had to readjust my sarcasm meter, too.

I think Hag values are low for many 3 &4 cars. I have a 1955 Chevy and a 1966 Mustang fastback both worth about 10K more than Hag values them. I do think my cars are worth about what hag says are the average values . Mine are both probably best described as average cars anyway.

If you add up the pieces (prices are my guess)-
3.2 motor - $6k
G50 - $4k
Chassis - $5k
It seems that the bottom must be around $15k - $16k, and things like salvage titles don't really matter with the parts value.

The reason I'm interested in the condition 4 cars is that I would like a car that is rough enough to deviate from stock for my own personal preferences, color, valences, etc... To me, any car that's better than condition 3 needs to remain stock.

I think the average value of $21,190 is way off too.

I do not see many average G50 cars for that amount. The $12,000 for #4 is off also, the market is crazy now and I would love to buy G50 cars for 12k all day long.

Is there any real science to Hagerty's valuations?

To me it looks like the old GIGO equation. (Garbage In, Garbage Out)
