1986 911 coupe

So after looking at a few 911 s I haven't been able to buy one yet here in canada sellers not so willing to let me take it for ppi etc
But did come across a white 86 coupe seller has had it for 15 years with service history etc with 190000 Kms no engine work just regular maintenance he's asking 25000 and will not budge
Is this to much for this year any thoughts on this model year

Thoughts:

An '86 will have a 915 trans rather than the G50 that many think add value. I'm not one of those people but I don't set the market. If you're like me this works to your advantage as 915 cars are generally cheaper.

190K kms is over 100K miles so no premium for low mileage either. Also no premium for recent engine/trans work and you might need to spend money later yourself. White cars generally don't command a premium either. Is the interior black (good) or a crazy colour like blue (only good if you're into it)?

Condition will determine a reasonable price and we haven't seen any photos to judge. PPI is a must as you know, but if it checks out well then $25K is not too far out of line. I'd like it at $22K or so - or as cheap as you can get it! It's too bad our dollar is tanking as this will make the car even more expensive for you.

Good luck and post pics if you can.

Cheers

d.

I see from your other posts you seem to have taken on the mantel of talking the market down. Good luck with that!

To the OP, a clean '86 with that mileage could easily sell for $25k US or more. Lots of other factors to consider, of course. You haven't given a lot of specifics, and pictures or a link to the car will get you some knowledgeable responses.

Coupe is a plus.
$25k is on the higher side for a 915 with almost 120k miles.
But, the fair price isn't a whole ton lower either.
$22k seems more right.

I would take it at 22 but this seller knows eventually he will get 25 so he's not moving away from 25 which leaves no room to negotiate and to me it's a deal breaker

He's not out of bounds at $25k.

Takes a lot more information about condition -- particularly the transmission and engine -- to judge whether it is a good deal for you at that price.

For those suggesting $22K this car is in Canada. $25k CDN = $22.5K USD, FWIW.

To the OP, have you seen/driven the car? Is this a color you like? Condition? Do you get good vibes from seller? etc etc... If you're not a flipper and looking to keep the car long term, in the big scheme of life, what's the big deal with 3k? When you sell the car say in 10-15 years (my definition of long term, ymmv), and you've enjoyed the heck out of it, 3k becomes really insignificant in the "big picture". What if you found a similar car for 22k in Florida? Are you willing to travel or go through the hassle of buying long-distance (with all the unknowns and risks involved)? Is the extra headache worth 3k? I think with these old 911s, it's kind of ludicrous to try to put a "surgical" dollar value on them. There are SO MANY factors involved. It's not as easy as putting an ACV value on a 2008 Camry...

No I meant today. Exchange rates - Bank of Canada

I have no idea what it was 18 months ago, but I did check the exchange rate having vacationed for the last week in your fine country.

Thanks for the info I haven't seen the car yet seller is very firm so no room to negotiate I will keep looking around but I do like the 3.2 vs the sc
I'm kicking myself for not pulling the plug on a 87 targa I negotiated to 15000 2 months ago it needed tires and few other things but oh well

I find some porsche sellers are difficult to deal with. I had made a deal with a 82 sc coupe row car for 17000 as is and I just wanted to see it and hear it runing before I gave him the cash but he didn't want to start the car unless I was paying him that day. Makes no sense to me but I will find something from the right seller but so far I'm not having luck with porsche sellers mostly because there are basically no 911s for sale here in canada unless u wanna pay 35 plus and they got the leverage

I'm assuming he refused to let you test drive it, right?
This is fairly common among 911 owners.

Never mind the test drive he wouldn't even let me come and hear it runing unless I was buying it on the spot which if it sounded right and looked right I would have bought it Then he emails me 3 weeks later saying it sold lol oh well
