A Quater Million Dollars, when did that happen...

I bought my 78SC in 2010, I paid 9K for it, 120K on the clock and about 20K on an engine rebuild. Its no garage queen but its a very solid car. At the time SC's were trading for under 10K if you knew where to look and the Carrera's for under 20K. The early cars (in good shape) had a bit of a range but could still be had for cheap. if they had rust you could buy them for their weight in metal. 2 early S cars just came up for sale for

$250,000 and $270,000

A QUATER MILLION DOLLARS!!!!, when did this happen, even if the cars trade for 2/3 of that its still a lot of money. When did this happen, did I miss the memo, you can get a 2.7 RS for that kind of money.

Regards
Dave

I guess prices on those have risen (Ill admit I have not checked in some time) but I remember them being in the 250K and up region. On a similar note after I bought my car I was at the Greenwich Concourse and there was a 959 there. I got to talking with the owners and they had paid, not to long before I bought my car, in the 280K range for the 959.

Dave

959's are $3/4M plus.(Not my favorite)
RS' similar or more.
SC's not so much, but if you ever sell, you'll make money on the deal!

You definitely did not get the memo. Go to Hagarty used values and put any pre-'74 911S in the search box. You'll see a graph that looks like a black diamond run @ Jackson Hole.

Maybe a double black diamond.

I'm with you OP - those two B-body S's are b-e-a-utiful. BUT, even in today's high market, they aren't $250k cars. A few years ago maybe only $50k, now $150k - but not $200+. Seems the seller is pricing upon futures or something.

At current rates of appreciation, early S cars will be $500k nd RS's $4-$7M in 2 years.

Better buy quick, and hope the music doesn't stop.

Like I said, if this keeps going and most all 911 cars shoot through the roof then folks will stop driving them. Then we will have to go to old VW cars while we can still afford them. I would like maybe a 66! Love that year. ....Or I could sell my Carrera and buy a cool 08 Cayman!!!!!

Good luck to all who have one and cash out high. That said $250-$500k for a early regular 911 is just insane and for someone who want to stare at it. That is not a $500k drive, sorry but it is true.

You see the dealers just pushing the envelope with every sale. I think we are already at $250 for s models. Problem is you still see plenty of cars that are sitting unsold at those prices. The high dollar cars are just that, cars that have special order colors or options. I think it is going to settle as 78 and up has already.

Everybody thinks their car is just as nice as these high dollar cars and the truth is they aren't. It is still very special cars that are bringing the big dollars. most of the others got a $15-20k bump.

I have to find a new forum as I don't have $500k to spend on a 911.

Right on. I remember in 2000 before I moved overseas, my boss had a line on a couple 959s for two customers (I worked at a place in highschool that did the first US conversion of the 959 for Lauren and others). I talked to him about it, and he had two cars lined up in Europe for $250K each that had been for sale for awhile. One bought one, the other bought a new 911 instead (my boss told him to). Well, well, well....it's crazy now.

I can understand why 959s are that much now. I really can. But the early cars?

Whoever has these S cars should sell now. I think it's time.

Although hard to find I would love to see the data on what these cars actually end up changing hands for. I would assume they are in and around the posted price but that seems like quite a chunk of change. I also laugh when a guy puts up a nice SC for cheap and the next post is always something to the nature of

"wow 100 responses in 40 minutes, the car is sold for 2K over asking"

I can understand 20K for an SC or Carrera they are great cars, worth more than what you can get new for 20K these days. But as has been said if I had an early S I would drive it every chance I could. At a around 1/4 million that is simply out of reach for most of us. I would hate to see these cars end up unused in some old rich mans garage.

I just went to hagarty to check up on my cars and the 911 I paid 9K for 5 years ago is now on average worth 21K, I guess I really missed the memo...

Regards
Dave

Hi Guys,

Great insights.

A bit of possibly useful info. Ferrari collectors are moving to Porsches. Many of the big Ferrari collectors are currently buying longhoods Ses to add to their car hoards. The Ferrari guys all believe that Porsches are undervalued and will catch up over the next few years. When a 72 Dino is worth $400k+ there really is no reason why a 72 911S shouldn't be worth the same.

Interesting point, I have seen a bit of this trend as well. I will however offer the idea that production numbers have (IMO) helped to drive the ferraris up in value.

Here are the 911 numbers (they seem more or less correct)

Porsche 911 Production volumes

I cant help but think (and I have found some Ferrari numbers) that Ferrari was not producing nearly as many cars per year as Porsche was and thus their are expected to be valued a little higher. What I have found is that Porsches are far better built and seem to last much longer and generally be problem free if you know what you are doing. Im sure a case can be made for Ferraris but I have always heard that they are often in the shops and expensive to fix.

Regards
Dave

Hagerty shows 1978 911sc to average $20,900.

They have one that sold for 42,500 musta been mint low miles trailer queen.

I figure my 78 with just over 100,000 miles and in nice clean shape will be in my garage for awhile yet

Whats interesting is that a lot of longhoods are coming out of the woodwork. There are 3 that all look very nice right now on the registry for $68-$90k. Also the green 911s in the green, green, green thread is on there for $235k. I wonder is some owners are seeing the top.

I can see longhoods topping out and impact bumpers car still going higher.
