Puzzling 930 Valuation
Why is Hagerty valuation for 1978 930 ( $ 97,769) so much more then 1986 930($69,144)?
This is basically the same car but 8 years older. If anything it should be the other way around. Does it make any sense? Price Guide Report Price Guide Report |

930's are not just used cars any more, they are becoming collectable, that is why the price is rising. You are looking at them from the used car stand point, in used cars newer is better, but almost universally in collectable cars older is better and the closer to the first serious or the original design the better, 78 has welded on fenders, full floating front rotors, yada, yada, yada. Stuff collectors like and care about and pay for, used car buyers just want a 930 in good shape and low miles newer because the rubber is better and maybe a 89 with the g50, that is used car thinking.
Used car buyers who buy 930 are really making a mistake now because they can buy a newer faster Turbo Porsche for the same or less money. |

I suspect production numbers...they made way more 86's than 78's
just checked that 78 is already up to $100K+ since you posted the link yesterday so buy it today cause tomorrow it will be even more! |

Fun discussion, I own both cars a 1978 and 1986 930. The newer turbos are not to be compared as one gentleman said...buy a newer one...new cars drive like a Sunday drive...no driver input. You must understand Porsche cars.....cars before 1990 are TRUE 911 cars to the Porsche geeks, long story, but basically unchanged from 1965 except engine management..
The 1978 is very low production, floating brakes, NO CATALYTIC CONVERTOR...was banned in the US after 79 for this reason. Basically the above is correct...age over the 86 and what I mentioned here...I think if you want a 930.. Grab the 86-88 cars...best value... |

Only a matter of time before 86-89 cars match the early cars, 505/6 cars are there now. The only cars lagging are the non-factory conversions and the heavily modded franken cars.

No not at all, you'll know one when you see it.
I think your car would bring around 50 in the current market, more with stock interior sans roll bar.

Janusz1, Your car is not cut and welded for the mods so I would not refer to it as a "Franken" car, but modds bolt on or other wise generally lower value for most buyers, it obviously can not be compared to stock 930's for $$.
It looks like your cars has a DMV assigned number tag which would effect resell price as much to some as your bolt on mods. Nice car, looks like fun. My two cents, enjoy it for what it is and not get wrapped up in the resell value thing especially at this point in the game with your car. It still is riding the wave up in $ and fun to drive what more do you want? I would 2nd the 50K estimate of Tt Surgeon. Last edited by ficke; 07-21-2014 at 06:44 AM.. |

Correct, 78 is very low production with only 461 cars for the US market. It is also the year that saw Porsche move the 930 to; - The larger 917 derived brakes w/floating rotors on front as stated - Engine displacement increased to 3.3 with the use of a completely new crank - The first use of an Intercooler on a Porsche street car All very significant changes that occurred for the 78 model year Quote:
The car pictured, although modified I think would command big dollars.. if its the car I think it is.. #461. If so, that is the last car produced for the 78 model year. I fall in the same boat with my 930 heavily modified in the early 80's although it is #0012 . The second 930 produced for the US. Again, collectors will pay for the correct and matching serial numbers, regardless.

A DMV assigned vin just means it wasn't originally a us market car. Used to matter. Doesn't anymore.

Yes, my car was the last made, #461 and it was made for US market of course.
The Arizona DMV assigned # was only because there was missed the middle "0" on the selling dealer VIN # paperwork and until 2010 the car was registered as VIN 930880461 (no such thing as 9 digit VIN) and the mistake was only corrected when moved to Arizona and DMV there assigned a proper 10 digits VIN # 9308800461. The factory tags on the door, in the trunk and on A pillar tag are all proper 10 digits. Funny thing, I have a COA which cites INCORRECTLY 9 digit error VIN. Porsche clerks make mistakes too. ![]() By the way this car drives like a dream. Practically no turbo lag, huge power, reinforced 915 makes for a huge difference; the only thing I do not do are drag take offs which were never my thing anyway. The car is exceptionally light considering all body parts are factory. I absolutely love the interior and seats are excellent. |

The engine is correct/matching # and being 3.4 and 7.5 compression it is a beast.
The transmission of course is wrong type for a collector, perfect for me ![]() |

I think blue cars with blue interior are hard sells, that's all. Personally, I love that combo, in fact ordered it on my 07tt.

I suspect the car has some secrets. Don't know what they are. If it was a little cheaper might be motivated to find out since it is local. My spidery sense is more rust than readily apparent.

Glad to see my Petrol blue 930 has been brought up for discussion. I don't want to hijack the thread, but I do feel the need to reply.
I bought this car with the intention of keeping it for the long haul, otherwise I certainly wouldn't have put $15+ thousand into it right off the bat and stockpiled another several thousand dollars worth of parts. I have crawled all over the car prior to buying and more since and I documented whatever I saw with a critical and objective eye. I've even received unsolicited help regarding my sales tactics, stating that I perhaps should have been more discrete in my naming of flaws. I do not see it that way. I want whomever buys the car to be happy and feel it was truthfully represented. I have no problem being forthright about where I am with it. I purchased it for $39k, spent over a thousand getting it titled, another 15k with Eisenbuds plus another 4-5 thousand on parts. That's about $60k and I have receipts to substantiate all of this. My interest in Porsches has continued to evolve over my period of ownership and I have decided that I want a newer car, specifically a 997 GT3. I have the money to buy one without selling the 930, but frankly it's irresponsible for me to do so and I already have more vehicles than space. I don't have a lot of time and as much as I enjoy chatting about these cars, I'm looking for an easy quick sale. Sure, I'd like to recoup my investment but unless I sit on it for a couple of years with continued across the board appreciation, that isn't likely to happen. I figure it's probably worth about $50k and I'm okay with eating the difference and getting what I want. I've had it sold twice to guys from CA, but I'm sure it won't smog, so they're moving on. A few others are actively interested. Matt, I respect your knowledge from lurking on these boards, and I know I'm not alone. If I don't have the car sold soon, I'd be happy to pay you to come up and look the car over. I'm sure I'll learn some things about it and you'd of course be free to share your thoughts whatever they may be. Thanks, Bill |

I think it's a solid car at a great price. I think it's just the color combo, as i mentioned. Contact a euro broker, your car would be right up their alley. Pm me if you need a name.
