Value & decision help

Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to porsche's but not new to the car affliction.

I bought an 81 euro non-sunroof 911 about a year ago I'm having a lot of fun with. I talked My father (from whom I inherited the affliction) into buying an 83 911. He has multiple cars and just isn't that into the 911. Shock, eh! He rather wrench and play with his other stuff. My father bought a nice very original car that had sat for a long time. I might buy it from him. However, I am starting to think that having two 911's may not be in the cards. Still looking at it.

2 Questions:

1. What do you think the current market value of each car?
2. which one would you choose if you only could keep one?

Both are running driving cars.

Introducing the contestants:

81 911 sc euro car non-sunroof coupe
Pacific blue metallic/ navy interior
- decent repaint
- interior good but, dash has a crack.
- big intake runner engine
- normal updates
- h4's
- car was an ex d.e. / auto cross car so has some suspension work and drives well.
- ac removed
- also has a rollbar in it with racing seats and harnesses.

83 911 sc sunroof car
Crystal green metallic/ black interior
- original paint with plenty of patina and needs attention in some areas.
- interior very good but, dash does have a crack.
- small intake runner engine
- bone stock! Everything works including AC.
- sport seats from the factory.

Thanks,

Jack

From your brief description i would think both are probably worth about the same, however in the current market the 83 in stock configuration sounds like it would go quickly. This all depends on how it presents. If I were you I'd add value by removing the windshield and replacing the dash Green over black is a very nice and desirable color combo, factory sport seats are a big plus. I think Crystal Green is like Ice green met ? its not listed as an 83 color so presumably its special order.

Personally I like the euro cars more but for most buyers someones DE project is just not as appealing as a stock looking Euro car. Post pics and tell us what documentation you have on both.

Thanks for your thoughts

The 81 was sold here on pelican back in 2006. I found the original ad/ thread and printed it out. It was a former pca region presidents's car. The 83 doesn't have much documentation but, it has a pca sticker on it and has been pretty much a one owner car.

When I get home I will register to an image sharing site and post some pics. Neither cars are show cars. The 81 is a pretty solid driver example that presents fairly well. Drives nice and tight! The 83 is crazy original. Like a time machine. Just has faded patina paint.

Stock 83 in crystal green with sports seats is probably a more valuable car -- roll bar, DE use, stripped of A/C -- that is going to bring down the value of the '81.

So the question is -- which one do you want to keep, & why? Do you want to have fun driving it, do you want to show it (cars & coffee, etc), or maximize potential appreciation (a crap shoot).

Sounds like the 81 may be better sorted mechanically, and will be a better driver. Crystal green & original may be a better bet financially, especially if the paint can be sympathetically spiffied up with some elbow grease & polish.

From a mercenary viewpoint -- and what the market values -- keep the sorted driver to drive (the 81) and sell the crystal green one while the market favors original, rare colors.

But if you are looking for a cruiser to drive on the streets, take to the local cars & coffee, and hope to keep for 10 years as an appreciating asset, the 83 is probably a better long term bet.

Thanks for the go to advanced reply tip. I thought it was strange I had to image link! Here are a couple of pics. They're not the greatest but, you'll get the general idea. Please don't mind the wrong color seats in the green 911. My father has trouble with one of his legs and wanted to put some non sport seats a friend of ours had to make it easier to get in and out of. The black sport seats are pretty perfect that came with the car.

Also, I believe the blue 911 is Tommy Wilson's from TN. If anyone knows him I would love to chat with him about the car.

Thanks,

Jack

Thanks for your thoughts Colb. That's my thinking as well. Maybe, I'll be able to hold on to both for those two reasons....hahahaha! We'll see. That's certainly not the "practical" approach.

As much as I dig that green, I would have to go with the Euro and the 930/10 motor. Early heat exchangers and some 964 cams and that car will fly!!

Green is the keeper, although you didn't list the mileage of either??

Unusual colour, unmolested, sports seats = $$$$

Cheers
