1973 914 value

I'm looking at a pretty solid 914. A little right dogleg rust, paint is original but spot painted, not in very good shape really but a wet sand and buff may go a long ways to making it look nicer. A few dings easily dealt with by a paintless dent guy. Older 2.0 swap with injection intact. Interior probably a 7, exterior a 6ish. Runs well, shifts well, brakes need to be gone through. Owner says new rotors and rebuilt calipers 3-4 years back. New windscreen and rubber seals are decent, some newer. Needs alignment, may need some suspension work but tracked well, solid feeling. With a weekends work could be a decent driver. I'll get it on a lift this weekend and get compression numbers and really make sure no more rust.

Thoughts? I'm in the $7k range, he's thinking $8,500. All the damn 914 is the next collector car articles are not helping me :-)

Thanks,
Jerry

How long has it taken to find this car - does it meet most of your criteria? Will he come off his price by any amount? Would you jump on it at $7500? If it meets most of what you're looking for and you feel good about it meet him in the middle.

It's a 2.0 from a 76. They did the swap a long time ago. Originally a 1.7 car. Injection was retained. It has the Dan Gurney wheels on it. The current owner has had it since the 70's and was at one time a pretty well known local VW/Porsche mechanic. He raced a four cam back in the day. He must be in his 80's and I'm dealing with him and is son. Both nice people. I'm getting it for a day to give it a PPI on Saturday and I'll know more then. I haven't looked widely for a car. This is a smaller town and not many come up for sale.

It's in the right ballpark. If you are in it for investment value, you would want a genuine '73-74 factory 2.0l. But for a fun driver, sounds like a good car that would be worth buying somewhere in the middle of your and his number.

Got a line on a 914-6 GT Tribute with a 2.5 (from a 2.0). Car will be cherry and a factory double, almost. Zero rust, brand new engine, know the builder well, and trust his work.

How about the value of this one?

$15-20k. A lot depends on quality of work and components. Did Raby or FAT build the engine? Or did the owner but parts and DIY. Etc.

The 914-6 I'm looking at is a professionally built car, by a well known, reputable shop. I'm betting the price will be higher than your highest estimate, Matt, low $20's. But the quality will be very high.
I know their cars well.

On the other side of the coin is a 72T that is in good to fair shape. It needs about $15K in some bumpers, paint work, interior work, engine and suspension work. All in all a very solid car. I could be into that one for $40-45K total.

Which way do I go? Decisions decisions...
