When to sell - Does season matter?
I have black/black '88 Carrera Coupe that I'm thinking of selling. It's a very original 120K mile car with full records (window sticker, original sales docs, all receipts from 5 prior owners, etc). It's a solid driver with original paint and no modifications (other than a high end stereo installed back in the 90s).
Condition is good as there are no issues other than the paint being old with heavy acid rain damage on several panels (these need a respray if you want it perfect) otherwise the car is a 10-footer. Unfortunately the prior owner parked it outside and rarely washed the car (yikes!). This is a great driver quality car as you won't be afraid to park it. I've been told that winter is the worst time to sell a car. Does it make sense to list it now or wait until Spring when presumably more people may be looking for a car? Or is demand on an unmolested G50 coupe strong enough where it doesn't matter? |

If you can back it up with records, season doesn't matter. In fact, since so many people pull their listings for the Winter, you will have a captive audience. GLWS.

Its debatable but spring worked for me. The buyer gets to enjoy it right away. I live up north so perhaps it is the other way around if you live in AZ or NM.

The market may be more liquid in the warmer months but you're not going to get a windfall profit. The season does not make a $$25k car a $30k car. The season may help sell it quicker and you may get a few more bucks its not a game changer.

I'd say right now it doesn't matter- market very strong + you are in Cali, no winter there. Risk of waiting - market goes splat, risk of selling market stays crazy and prices continue to increase.

Wait until summer it won't sell until at least summer.
Try now and it could sell sooner.

Dont wait. Prices will implode come springtime - just like they did this year
![]() Seriously, you might get more interested parties once the weather turns, but the market being as is I think that it will do very little to the price. You have car that should sell quickly now at around 30K. The condition of the paint doesnt matter too much. Today it is much cooler to have a nice clean original car that looks like it is being used daily, imo. I guess we have Ronnie and Hank Moody to thank for that. Just tell any serious party that you had your way with Charleze Theron in the passenger seat and the car will sell itself ![]() Last edited by christiandk; 11-06-2014 at 02:56 PM.. |

With basically a national car market, seasonal differences are minimized -- because there are buyers in California, Florida, Texas, and Arizona that are less influenced by weather.
In fact, old Porsches with dubious A/C are probably more driveable in the late fall in southern/western states

Holy Cow! Here in San Diego it is still Summer! 86 today, 90 yesterday! Remember, in the west we do not put our lawn equipment away.. Ever. Average temp in San Diego year round is 72. So people here look for cars anytime of the year.

Remember, there are more Porsche cars in California than any place in the world.

Matt, I just drove my Daughter home from Kansas City last week and went through your state through interstate 70. You live in God's Country.

I like to think so. I miss Yosemite and Tahoe and the ocean but it's a decent trade off.

That is why California is the worst place to sell a Porsche and good place to buy them.
