1967 912
Hey guys, i found a roller I'm interested in getting. comes with trans but no motor. its in fairly good condition. 1967 912 with 5 gauges. it has been primed, has complete exterior other than turn signals, and brand new sheet metal for the floors. (not installed)
im not buying this to make a numbers matching car, maybe a 912r with a hi po motor or maybe a 2.0 motor. what should i expect to pay for something like this? is 6k around what i should pay or should i just wait and buy a complete car? |

In SWB cars and being you are in Mich., Rust is your primary concern. If it is not rusty, rockers front pan etc. the 6K is a good deal. If rust then, move on and find one you can play without having to do rust repair, even if you pay 15K for a non rusty roller. It will seem cheap compared to a rusty 6K car.

great advice. i was curious if i would save money by purchasing this over a 15k roller, but i know these parts add up quick and then with floors out i need to basically do a full resto and you fall into the slippery slope.

I think your description 'brand new sheet metal for the floors. (not installed)" could be a big clue of why the car is for sale. There is nothing easy about replacing the floors in the car, especially if it currently has a complete interior that will need to be stripped out. To do the floors correctly pretty much requires a rotisserie and the room to work with it.
That is usually the point of failure in the good intentions of restoring any car. The owner gets all the parts ready and then realizes what's ahead and throws in the towel. Reality sets in and they realize it's better to sell the project before getting in over their head and rendering the car worthless. Those missing turn signals could easily set you back $500 these days. Just for a decent set of driver quality lights. Missing parts of any kind on these cars are now very expensive and add up very quickly. Better to spend the extra bucks on a complete rust free car and be way ahead of the game. |

Paint, floors and an engine are going to be at least $15- $20k unless you can do it on a shoestring. Now you are into it for over $20k. I dunno.

Here's one for comparison. How does it match up to the one you are looking at?

Paint code on the car says it was originally Sand Beige.
I only posted this so the OP could get an idea of a different car that may or may not be more complete and give him an idea on his original question of pricing. No pictures of the floors, just their biased description that the body is in great condition. I doubt they are P-car experts. |

Not criticizing you, just critiquing the car. I personally don't see it as a comparable.
