porsche 911 prices

Hi folks

I got a friend at work who wants to buy an aircooled 911. What happened to the 911 market? The prices I see are crazy high. A so so early 70 T for $60k? That's nuts. I'd rather buy a newer 997 for that kind of coin and have working AC.

I don't get it but I guess I'll just hang onto my beater 76 S.

Agree. There comes a point where it's just too much for what you get.

At worse your friend wont loose money. At the other end... Who knows?

A classic 911 drives great. (which is more than can be said for just about any other classic)
I really think this is one of the reasons they are going up in value.

And no modern car can touch it for style and panache IMO.

The long hoods are very expensive.

Prices have been dropping for the past few months though. Let's call it a market correction. This weekend is the great market test - Amelia. Keep in mind though that Amelia prices are for 100 point cars. They are the best of the best.

Long term the air cooled cars are all rising. The 996 and 997 cars are dead in the market.

Right now the best place to check value is the Hagerty site. It's not perfect but it's the best we have.

By the end of the weekend we'll see what the best cars bring. Then every thing else will fall into place.

best buy to drive an air cooled car is probably a driver SC,or 3.2 Carrera. AC isn,t totally useless in them except maybe in the south. That $19 SC mentioned above gets you a galvanized body anyway but a beater none the less.
There are still some bargains in 964 and even 993 cars.
Higher miles but well maintained 993 are a bargain and can still be found low /mid 30,s. Certainly NOT a beater ,working AC and almost as much power as a stock 930.

If newer is more desirable, then there is no compelling reason to buy an air cooled 911 at these prices. 996's, and to a lesser extent 997's, are very cheap right now and offer a certain type of enthusiast a huge amount of comfort and performance at comparatively modest outlay. I've driven 996's and 997's and they are very nice cars.....for my tastes, almost too nice. At semi legal speeds, they don't thrill or challenge like an old air cooled does. I did a tour (with a bunch of Porsches) with my daughter and at one point she hopped into a guys 997 Turbo. The road was a twisty affair with many gear changes. At the next stop she got back into my 85 and told me the driver had the stereo going and didn't bother to manually shift the PDK. They had a very nice conversation at normal volume. In my car (at the same speed) it was a real fun and challenging drive. I think someone can argue that by that logic, a model "T" would be even more entertaining LOL....but I think most guys on this board would know the difference. If a guy is after lap times and comfort alone, the market has made the choice as easy as possible. Cheers

I don't think that is fair talking about a non working A/C. On a hot day my 85 A/C will cool down my car from 92 all the way to 86 degrees!

I watched Chasing classic cars last night and Wayne Carini couldn't get 68,000 for a pristine, matching numbers, low mileage, mostly original paint 1965 911.

With the air cooled getting so out of reach the 2006-2008 Cayman is a great bargain. Sure it is not an old Carrera but Holy Smokes it is fun to drive.. Not only fun for everyday but fast becoming a weekend track car at Porsche events. One of the best sports cars in the world for $26-$28,000.

I've seen that episode a few times now and wouldn't be surprised if it's several years old. The quickly rising prices of anything aircooled is a fairly recent phenomena. 914, bugs, buses, it's crazy! 911's are on top of the aircooled heap. Glad I got in when I did or I'd be looking at 240z's, which are also starting to climb.

I agree with this. Like them so much more than a Boxster. Someday I'll have one right next to the 2004 996 TT. The two best deals in the Porsche world right now.

That episode is at least 2 years old.
I'd give him his $75K tomorrow, if he still had it.

Otto,
Have your friend look at '80s cars. Very good ones are still in the $30Ks. And they are somewhat better cars, while still 'old school' torsion bar Porsches.

it seems like prices have about doubled from say, 10 years ago. For years and years the normal price of a SC was around $13-14k. Now the same car, just older with more miles, is in the low $30k.

I need to finish the paint on my 76S. Its been a hanger queen for 5 years and I want to drive it again. I think I'll take it down again to bare metal when I retire and I'm not stressed out about the economy and finding work.

my friend is a few years from retiring. He couldn't afford a 911 back in the 70s when he started working and now he can't afford the same car 35 years later.

maybe I can find a early 80 SC for him that's not out of this world priced

Never forget:

The most expensive car you can ever buy is a cheap Porsche.
