Part out or package sale?

So (contrary to my username) I'm thinking of selling one of our projects. It's an '87 930 in Venetion Blue Metallic/F8. Numbers matching, non- running car. Needs front fenders, f&r bumpers, rear deck lid / spoiler + more. Overall a very clean non damaged car BUT it does have a salvage title ONLY because it was abandoned by the owner. The guy put a ton of money into this car and an unscrupulous shop owner took advantage of him. He got so discouraged he just left it at the shop. Bob Hindson Racing (Kansas City) acquired the car (they WERE NOT the shop that shafted the poor guy) and went through the process of getting the title. When it was issued, Missouri branded it as Salvage because it was abandoned, even though it's mostly complete and damage free. Motor is apart and Aaron (BHR's owner) can build it for a very fair price. Aaron built the motor in our '86 930 and it is a work of art and speed. Anyways, my question to the brain trust is this; would I be better off selling as a package deal or parting out piece by piece? My main consideration here is ROI. IF there were a way to legally wash the title it could be very valuable. I have the car & title and it's still located in Kansas City.

I am not a member of the Brain Trust, but my guess is it is worth more as it sits that parted out. The salvage title might reduce it 10-20% in value, but a restored 1987 930 seem to be going for $75,000 and up these days. Some talented operator could give you $20,000, put another $50,000 in work on it and come out ahead. Good luck

What, what, what? Don't go down this road, no 'washing' should be done. It is what it is.

Honesty, the year of this car is not particularly rare. However, being it is a 930 and the prices are such I would not part it out and put it all back together (correctly). Salvage titles don't mean much on a car like this as there are not that many around and as you know just by writing this Salvage means a lot of things.

Just take lots of nice clean photos of the re-build and include them with the car. The future owner will probably understand your story.

I tried to help sell a low mile, complete and nice 87 Turbo last Fall. Could NOT find a buyer in the $60s and the car finally sold in the $50s. I think 87 may be the 'low point' in the air cooled Turbo market today. Unfortunately, $20K may be 'all the money' for this car as it sits.

I say do not part it out. With the values of 930's I think someone will pay significantly more than you could have gotten for the car 3 years ago. Most of my decision is based on the fact I love these cars and hate to see one sold off for parts. About 6 or more years ago I was looking for some parts and called the outfit in LA. They had a few 1989 930's that they were parting out as they were worth more back then in pieces. These were un-wrecked running cars they had purchased for the sole purpose of parting out. I thought it was sad back then and don't know what to think now. Too bad they didn't just park them for a few years.
I need another project so if you put it on the market let me know.
The rear fender scoops need to go. How is the interior?

So, I just noticed that these pics are upside down on my "Big Boy" computer but NOT on my iPad DAMN this is frustrating. Anyway, I agree that it would "feel" much better to sell it as a package and not part it, BUT, I'm after the return more than the feeling. I guess it's my capitalistic nature coming through! I will post more pics soon, probably in the "Cars for Sale" section. The interior is VERY clean. I have a good idea of what it would take to put back together dollar wise, from a non-DIY'r perspective. To be upfront here and before I list it on PP or fleabay, I'm expecting in the high 20's as it sits. I don't need to sell, and will probably regret doing so I if I did in a few more years, but I am looking to use the $ for another car I would "like" to have, one that isn't another project.

How many miles?
Maybe a list of missing parts will help but I am with Techweenie on this one. I am in the market for another project but for me not much more than 20K with the engine in boxes and missing parts. Full engine rebuild, fix fender vent and repaint, missing glass?, body parts, salvage title. You never know, some really crazy prices out there.

I have a 2003 911 and it's hard to find parts and they are expensive parting out in my opinion will make you more money but will take much longer to recoup and you will have to list and price everything

Have you ever parted out a car before? Expect to spend 2-3 times what you think it will take you in time and effort. You will deal with a lot of flakes and hassles. Pay yourself about $2/hr for what you are gonna do. The big stuff will leave quickly, after you figure out packaging. Then you will be selling widgets for the next 2 years.

I've done it and it blows. I was left with doors, glass,bumpers - all the big things no one wanted or could ship. I also tried a few motorcycles and I concluded 1) I would never do it again and 2) when I added up the 100s of hours of removing parts, cleaning them, photographing them, storing them, packing them, and then shipping them I made around .73 cents an hour. Not for the faint of heart, someone who values their time, or somebody that wants to get rich - or even break even.

Matt & CountD, Points well taken, thank you. Considering I make about 2.73 per hour now, I don't need another distraction costing that much or I'll go broke! I will be selling/listing this in total (what I have at least) in the next few weeks. I appreciate all the comments.
