Another Pricing Laugh

I am sorry but I crack up looking at some of the prices on these cars listed on eBay. High 40's for 160k mile cars? High $60's on 55k mile cars. Mid years with miles for high $40's. 200k plus miles 964's for high 40's.

I guess people really believe buyers are paying those prices. I haven't seen any sell at those prices but there sure have been enough listed. Some of them are listed for months on eBay and go without ever seeing a bid close.

Its comical to see this fever boil over.

And when these cars don't sell it isn't a bubble popping. I really hope the insanity ends soon, if for no other reason than folks who haven't been paying attention don't pull their weekend driver and try to cash out.

A few years back when longhoods took off I drove up to Wyoming (no, not there!) to look at an actual '65 912. Poor little car. It had a fiberglass RS front bumper that had hit a cattle guard and was repaired with farm level glass laying. It had that BS aftermarket "impact bumper" rear center panel that was all the rage when folks were updating these cars. It had all kinds of window seal leakage rust and hadn't run in ten years.

I drove up on a Saturday morning and the guy was still trying to get it running when I showed up. He had drained the tank, refilled it, and was trying to get a leaking mechanical fuel pump to hold pressure long enough to make it run. It was parked in a barn under the wing of a homebuilt airplane that was just as sorry. Under the other wing was a Corvair in worse shape than the 912. And the guy thought it was worth $15k based on Ebay and conversations he saw here.

I felt bad for the guy. He had dying trees from failed irrigation attempts, a cracked greenhouse igloo that didn't keep the heat in, and dead jeeps, VW golfs, and tractors all over the place. Wife had left him and he was out in the middle of nowhere all alone with two dogs and some chickens. But none of that makes that car special. 5 years later it's still not a $15k car.

Well spank me hard and call me Rhonda - there is a future writer hidden in the gearhead! A writer of sad and tragic tales of personal tragedy, but I did not see that coming.......

I am ready for chapter II Matt!

Will the wife return home if he gets rich selling the cars to the Dutch and German hoarders after he restores the cars - selling his dogs and poultry to pay for parts?

A completely agree. There is no bubble and if cars don't sell at these outrageous prices, still does not mean it is a bubble. These cars listed above are so far ahead of the market. Even some cars on this forum have made me want to comment on the at least 10k over value ask but I don't want to be that guy.
Still, a car priced within 5k of real value will sell quickly. The market speaks.

However, some people are being smart. I am not a buyer now but the 80SC on the forum, silver and black with polished fuchs would be very interesting to me if I were….That is a car that the front runners are listing over 40, the ask from the seller on that car seems very reasonable.

I have seen low miles C4s's sell close to the 90's. A lot lower miles than the 30k one listed here on pelican. Some of the listings are down right funny. People are really dreaming

I agree some of the asking prices out there are crazy, especially the higher mileage examples. With that in mind I was wondering if anyone in the community had a estimate on a higher millage 3.2 Cab. with the G50. I was considering this one that I found in my local area. It an 1989, with about 168,000 miles on it and not cosmetically perfect, but appears to be mechanically well sorted out.

i agree, i see all these cars way over priced like 912's for 95k and stuff like that, its amusing, but at the end of the day that car sits for sale for months or years depending on how long the seller decides to wait.

the cars that ARE SELLING, are selling for reasonable prices within market value.

i had to explain this to a friend yesterday, if you see ridiculous pricing it does not mean they are selling for that and it does not mean you will get that either. what you don't see is what the cars actually sell for.

Prices are higher.... thats a fact. I doubt they're going back ... ever. Prices are not where a lot of these cars are listed.

$45 to 50k mid years with miles on them. $60's on G50 cars with 50 to 60k miles. 200k mile 964 coupe for $47,900. These cars wont sell at those prices anytime soon. End of story.

Here are a couple of cars that raised my eyebrows at the Hershey Car Corral:

This 1974 911S was claimed by the owner to be all original (paint, interior, engine), with (I think) 73k original miles. Car was immaculate, and certainly looked legit in person. Owner said he worked at Porsche dealership, and had maintained everyone with original parts.

Was asking $75,000.

It may be one of the best 74S cars out there, but that is big money.

Then there was this one:

1986 Coupe, highly optioned. I believe it had 140k mileage on it. Car had been thoroughly reconditioned, including an extremely high quality paint job. It was a really nice looking car.

Which it would need to be -- because as you can see in the pic, he was asking $59,000.

A great color and really nice looking car. But at 2 months on the market at $105k it clearly isn't priced to sell...

Think about this....This forum could have 95% new members in the next two years. I see folks selling their long time Porsche cars all over this site. Or really thinking about it. What is sad is that I bet a lot of owners do not even need to sell their cars, it's just that the money is too good. When it's gone , it's gone. Sold my 356B for $9,250 in the late 90's. Now I could never buy another one again.

OMG!!! I owned a 924 limited edition like the white one in the picture!!!! Worst car I ever owned. Went 0-60 in about 20 seconds and the dash imploded! But it looked kind of cool!

I dont know the market in the long hoods nearly as well as I know the Sc through 993 markets. That looks like a very nice car but from my research it looks massively over priced. CMIAW but its like a $60k car ?

I think it is worth more than $60k.

I would think $80k, plus or minus.

It is a great color, and the 72s seem to get a bonus.

it is pretty comparable to this one:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/841905-update-1972-porsche-911-t-98k-documented-miles-gulf-orange-numbers-matching-origina.html

Dude was asking $119k. Had it advertised here for about four months. Says it sold in March. I wonder what it settled out at.

It all depends on the provenance. I worked on the car in the link during Bill Jackson's and Tom Conway's stewardship. When Tom sold it to Prescott it was in the ballpark of what 3.2 drivers sell for today. IIRC, Prescott bought it in 2006.
