Careful with this one guys - Craigslist

1986 Porsche 911 targa

Drove it yesterday. Expect to double your investment to get the car sorted.
  1. Transmission needs to be rebuilt - worst I have driven
  2. Clutch is almost toast
  3. Interior is shot
  4. Targa top needs recovered and new seals
  5. Not original paint - bubbling, chips, dings, etc.
  6. exterior rubber trim / bellows, etc. were poorly reinstalled after paint and likely need replacement
  7. hood not sitting down properly - lifted at passenger front
  8. Asked when last valve adjust was done = seemed unsure, said about 32k miles ago.
  9. loud valve noise
  10. rocker panels at all four jack points are damaged, rolled up and in
  11. I walked away.......buy a sorted $35k car and be $5k-$10k ahead of the game

Some sleazeball will buy it, put a coat of wax on it, and try to sell it for $30k..........

He loves the car but hasn't bothered to put any money in it the last 11 years.

At least he is asking reasonable money for it.

Not saying it is a deal at $20k. But at least it is in the universe of the possible.

There is a guy in the classifieds here trying to sell a freshly painted roller -- with no interior, engine, or trans -- for $14k.

Maybe he does love it. So many people bought these cars that they couldn't really afford to maintain when they were cheap. Buying a $10k Porsche doesn't mean that you can afford several thousand dollars a year of maintenance. It's a tale as old as the SC model line.

Agreed. Put $20k into this car and I could be sold for around $40k, especially in that color. But I don't think it needs $20k to be a driver. Maybe $5-10K.

Also, when a car needs a clutch, one cannot make any reasonable assessment about the condition of the gearbox. A car with a failing clutch would shift like shyte even if the gearbox was just rebuilt.

Why would an old 911 need several thousand dollars of maintenance a year? Do the tune up yourself for $200 from our host. At a shop about $1000. Oil change $100? I guess if you drove the car 50,000 a year and had the work done...Never mind.

I treat these cars like an account that I accrue for. No, you don't need $3k a year. That was a little bit of hyperbole. But in year 5 of ownership when it needs a clutch job and a gearbox rebuild you have it budgeted in your long term costs. I bet this car has never had its suspension bushings gone through. That's about a grand or so. How about a full brake job with pads, rotors and fluid? What's that going to run you at a shop? Tires alone are $1000 and you need those every 3-5 years even if you don't drive a ton of miles. I don't want to trust my life to old dry cracked rubber. I dealt with that first hand when I got a rear blow out on the interstate at 85mph.

Keep in mind that a seller like this is not like us. I bet he doesn't even change his own oil. We know how much labor we can save by using our own two hands and a few Saturdays a year. That's not the majority ownership of these cars. And now because this car has 11 years of deferred maintenance it needs a bunch of it all done at once. I'm beginning to think my estimate of what it would take to get this car on its feet might be a little low.

Matt,

I know what you mean about diagnosing a transmission with a bad clutch, but believe me, this transmission will need some work. My 84 Targa had all of the usual 915 quirks, and this one made my old 915 feel like a well oiled machine. The shifter bushing was gone completely and the shifter flopped around at will. The kid who bought the car from his dad said it has been like that since his dad bought it 80,000 miles ago. The grind from neutral to first which also has been that way for 80,000 miles has to have taken its toll on the gear teeth. First gear syncro is gone......

My favorite part was when the kid said "I never drive the car over 3000 RPM since I don't need to. It has plenty of power without having to beat on it". First of all, what kid in his mid 20's doesn't beat on a Porsche 911? Second, if he honestly never drove the car over 3000 he is missing the point of 911 ownership......

Link is now dead. Car must be sold. He said he had a guy from North or South Carolina pretty much offer to buy it sight unseen for $20k. Also had a guy from Germany call him. If its too good to be true.........

Nobody loves inanimate objects. I took his claim as a bit of bs salesmanship. I guess it worked. Now if he had said "it had so much deferred maintenance and care that I must sell it while it still runs" I would have been impressed.

In some eastern cultures yes, there women are treated just like you treat livestock in Tx - food, pleasure and entertainment.
