Newbie wants to know...

Why isn't this car bringing the money?
Porsche 911 911SC Targa | eBay

It was listed a few days ago and never tapped the reserve only reaching around $20k.
I'm just trying to learn the Porsche market but it looks like this car is the goods. What am I missing? I'd love to hear the pros and cons in this listing.

Red with chocolate leather interior? Small prospect base.

High mileage.. 3.0L engine (the bigger 3.2L engine starting in 1984 cars).. And perhaps more people want the more desirable G50 transmission that is in the 87s and up. .. So I honestly think that this '82 Targa is worth about $25k.

Mileage isn't outrageous at 110K, but as noted the colour combo may not suit the tastes of many.

It's a Targa which is normally a bit of a minus on value, has colour-matched Fuchs which also don't appeal, and the description is lacking any sort of detail. No maintenance history or records either. Hence, $25K.

Not so bad, since 5 years ago this was a $10-12K car.

Cheers

d.

I think that car should sell at $20k. Seller thinks it is worth more than it is.

I, for one, am in the market for an SC, but I would not want to buy it at auction on ebay.

I think most end users feel the same way. Flippers and dealers will actually complete a transaction on Ebay. For the seller, Ebay is a great marketing tool that will often result in a sale off the books because the car got seen.

If I were you, I wouldn't hesitate to look at cars on Ebay and if you find something you like, start a conversation. Ask your questions. Pursue a PPI. And then try to buy the car if it checks out. Lots of auctions get ended early.

I personally like brown interiors, but it is not a great match with red. Much better with white, or silver, or even light blue.

With the tail, Targa, and red fuchs, it is just an ugly car.

All that being said, the crappy ad with zero useful information is probably the biggest obstacle to the sale. What useful information is there? Furkle.

"worn interior, but runs great; new tires"

That is fine for a 2010 Honda. For a 33 year old Porsche, legit buyers would like to know a little more.

It has gray market car front fenders not in it's original exterior color. I've seen an SC before in Guards red/ chocolate interior. Was not an originally red car. Originally a brown car. This one is most likely the same. Exterior was probably a brown or beige shade. Paint does not appear original to me in the front trunk or other areas of the car, OR at the very least, the interior has been replaced. Why? Why does it have ROW front fenders yet all the other gear appears to be U.S. gear. US gauges, US rear bumper, (Wide rubber pads). Too many question marks. My money would be on an accident in the cars past. I would steer clear myself.

It has probably been resprayed at some point, but it doesn't look like a color change to me.

If it was changed, it was an extremely thorough job.

It has an Indiscrot sticker on the slam panel of the engine bay. Doubtful something would go through the trouble to source that on a re-color.

I think it is just a bad choice by the guy who ordered it from the factory.

Good discussion. Thanks for all of the input. I agree that it's probably a $25k car, which may actually have been the reserve last auction. Be interesting to see if it sells this time around.

I actually like the looks of it and would probably be a player in the low 20's but my recent M-Coupe purchase put me back into the window shopping/research mode til fall.

By the way, it takes some chutzpah to call India red "rare".

It is rare only to the extent it was called Guards red in the US, and India in Europe.

Dealer is a schmuck, most likely.
