Value of 2.7 Engine
I have a complete and running 1975 2.7 engine that I'm thinking of selling. The motor runs great and is in my '75 Targa however I recently found a freshly rebuilt 3.0 for sale. Rather than mess round with resealing and hotrodding the 2.7, I figure I can save the effort and simply drop in a fresh 3.0.
What's this worth? I'm thinking $4K for the complete motor including CIS and exhaust (plug and play). My 2.7 is fully stock with CIS and runs great. It must have been rebuilt at some point as it seems to run too well to be original. If it's original it should have 110K miles as this is the original engine for my car. It leaks oil from all of the typical places so it'll need to be cleaned up and resealed. It has a later style fan (not the 5-blade version) and has Bursch headers and an OEM 2 in 1 out exhaust. It's still in the car and I intend to leave it in until someone commits to buying it. This way someone can drive the car to test the motor. |

Have you recently reviewed the prices of middies? I wouldn't break a numbers matching '75 like I would have 5 or 10 years ago. Put it on a pallet in the corner for if you ever sell. It is worth several thousand dollars. I think it will knock more than that off the value of your car.
Still do the swap. Have fun with the car. But I would think twice about selling that engine.

I should have mentioned my car is far from stock. I'm 1/2 way through an all metal backdate so I think it's worth more as a hot rod than with the stock engine at this point.

I kept my numbers matching 2.4 when I put a high compression 3.2 in my 73.5......It makes sense if you have the room to store it....

Reviving this thread. I found a fresh 915 and 3.0 engine for my hot rod project so it looks like I'll be selling my '75 915 and 2.7 combo soon. I know I'm breaking up a numbers matching car but my car is a hot rod and I don't have the room or funds to "pickle" the motor for the next guy.
The trans has a weak 3rd syncro but it's drivable as long as you don't try speedshifting it. The 2.7 runs great but it's leaky - it needs the "triangle of death" resealed as well as it looks like the valve covers are a bit leaky. It is well maintained and didn't have pulled or broken studs during the last valve adjust 2-years ago. I haven't done comp or leakdown but I suspect it'd be good as the car has good power and smooth idle/acceleration. Both trans and engine could be cleaned, resealed and used as-is for a driver. Any ideas on the value? I'd like to sell it as one unit trans/engine ready to drop in including CIS and exhaust. |

If the car is not a matching number car- might as well put in a Al case rather then a mag case.

There's a 2.7 that's been for sale for a while around $4500 and hasn't sold.
What's the type number on the gearbox? Some were 7:31 and some were 8:31 in '75. The former is worth more than the latter.
