color and value

I think the market is a little different for 30+ years old Porsches as opposed to when they were new. Today odd, rare colors bring value because of the simple rarity of it. But I don't think my '79 930 would've be worth anything extra back in '79 and actually I think many might of found it repulsive.

In the last 2 months Ive had 4 people knock on my door and ask if the Porsche parked in the garage is for sale. Its a 78 White targa.

Its a frenzy out there right now. Color may matter to some but not others.

Having said that Im tired of white cars and trucks so I bought a Petrol blue 80 coupe friday morning. so i guess color does matter to me. Its also got half the miles though. 65K vs 110K

It's interesting to me how so many folks on this forum just do not like Guards red. Still my favorite. My car is black and I like that also. I just did some checking and the most popular Ferrari color is still red. In fact it is known in the Ferrari world as "resale red!"

I think that red Porsches are beautiful but just not for me. Just a little too much. They stand out and say look at me in my red Porsche everyone. Not to mention the way I drive and the target it would provide for cops.

No, for me there are lots of other great colors that are a little more incognito. Nothing at all wrong with guards red though. Just dont have a flamboyant enough personality for it I guess...

It's truly a different strokes for different folks thing. There are a bunch of new members and even older water cooled owning members on RL who have been buying Guard's Red cars. Seems every other day I open a "look at my new 911" thread to find a red car.

It isn't about liking or disliking red.

It is that no one is paying extra for a red car, because probably 25-30% of them were painted red from the factory.

Tradional national racing colors; Germany silver, Italy red, USA blue/white, England Green, France blue, etc.
Cars from these countries evolved somehow to look "better" in national racing color.
That's why German cars look better silver, while Italians look better red...Brits green, etc..

Except that white is the official German racing color, contrary to popular belief generated by the silver arrows then M-B's post war continuation of that. But either way white or silver.

Never thought I'd own a red car. Had one before, it was the wife's mini. She had to have red. But on this air cooled whim I bought condition and local, and red it wa, with cashmere interior to boot! But I like it. It screams 80s.

I've had the car almost 3 weeks and I'm not kidding I have gotten more comments about it than I get when I drive my other Porsche. The red just stands out, people love the tail, the Fuchs etc. anyway it's a hoot to drive. Wife loves it too. And she likes red.

On colors and value. Pin the pic below mine is the silver rs. The green one is a friend if mine. Our cars are nearly identical spec (well they were until a little power update for him) except for color. His would sell for maybe 50-75k more (and possibly a lot more) because of green. And rarity isn't it. Silver is the rarest 997.1rs color. But like my 89, I shopped condition and local before color. And I love it. The silver car gets its fair share of attention (which I hate) but it's from enthusiasts who know what an rs is. The red car just looks cool.

Here is something rare: it looks like a special order beige cab with very odd looking cloth pinstripe brown sport seats and interior. The person who special ordered this car went all in on beige and brown - back in the day when Miami Vice and bright colors were the rage.

All I know is that you are going to pay allot of extra cash due to the rarity of the color.

Here's examples of premium colors that will command a 20% or more premium (non PTS). Pretty much all the colors I like carry a premium minus Red.

911 SC - Arrow Blue or any pastel from the factory.
911 3.2 - Yellow or Green
964 - Ruby Red or Mint
993 - Riviera Blue
