color and value
re recent threads on color, would my car bring a premium for unusual color (garnet red metallic), all other things equal?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1433874355.jpg |
Hard question. But not in my world when the car is modded and not a hot color compared to the blue, green and yellows but opinions are like belly buttons - everyone has one.
FS: 1986 911 Carrera Targa $24,500 - Rennlist Discussion Forums Nice car though, but lose the cock tail :) |
I don't think garnet red is a plus. Not a negative - but people are not going to pay extra for it.
The decal and ducktail are going to be of selective appeal. |
I'm seeing condition trumping color and mileage. That is a neat color though, cool car for sure.
|
As a Duck I gotta say those USC colors definitely detract from the value ...
|
Garnet with burgundy are both good colors, but paired may be too much for many buyers, who would prefer a contrasting interior color such as beige our black.
|
I'd appreciate opinions on this color interior in a silver car. Too much of a red explosion? Would you vote plus or minus on desirability/value? Thanks!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1433937560.jpg

I think the bright red interior on a silver car is an awesome combo.

Color preferences change with the times. In 'austere' times, people prefer austere colors.
In the 80s and most of the 90s, owners painted their Conda/Viper/Tangerine/yellow 911s black or white. Even red. Porsche made a conscious effort to bring back interesting colors with the 993 introduction. Now, look at the new GT3RS press car - it's purple! "Citrus colors" bring a 20% premium on early 911s now. Rare or paint to sample, maybe up to 40%. Interiors are a bit less consistent, but red interior with black or silver paint is going to be huge for a subset of buyers. The Garnet car appears to have a matching Garnet interior. I'd say that's probably extremely attractive in person, and I'd call it at +10% to average market value. |
BTW, according to our show, Audi is offering some recycled Porsche colors on the S3 - for only +$18K(!) for the whole package.

Speaking of unusual color combos and value, this one was just re-listed. It was on eBay all last week with a starting bid of $55K and no bids. Guess they're trying the BIN method. Another car that might be "gotta have" for a small segment of the market. But quite the opposite of outlandish. My wife called it the "Cadillac Porsche"

Here's one that probably seemed like a great idea - at the time. The chrome wheels are a nice touch as well.

"In a sea of Guards Red this is a beacon of sunlight"
I don't hate it, but I'd like it more without the cashmere center vent... |
I remember a red 930 & burgundy 67S w/ green interior.... they were to die for....... The odder the better on the must have models creates additional value.......
|
Sounds like euro color combos happening in the 80s.
Heard of a guy buying new Corvettes in these contrasting colors to ship overseas. Was told the factory required payment to actually build the car. I have two 73.5 cars which were black and tan interior when new but both were changed to black probably in the 80s. I did a few myself. Wish they were both the original colors now. |

I have had people hunt me down after I parked to offer to buy my Garnet Red 930. This color is unique in person - sometimes reddish, sometimes brownish, sometimes purple-ish. I doubt that would happen if it were Guards, Black or White. Who knows what the premium would be, but I think it would certainly sell fast.

I think the market is a little different for 30+ years old Porsches as opposed to when they were new. Today odd, rare colors bring value because of the simple rarity of it. But I don't think my '79 930 would've be worth anything extra back in '79 and actually I think many might of found it repulsive.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1434478267.jpg

In the last 2 months Ive had 4 people knock on my door and ask if the Porsche parked in the garage is for sale. Its a 78 White targa.
Its a frenzy out there right now. Color may matter to some but not others. Having said that Im tired of white cars and trucks so I bought a Petrol blue 80 coupe friday morning. so i guess color does matter to me. Its also got half the miles though. 65K vs 110K :) |

^^^^^Sweet car. Love the color. What is it?
|
It's interesting to me how so many folks on this forum just do not like Guards red. Still my favorite. My car is black and I like that also. I just did some checking and the most popular Ferrari color is still red. In fact it is known in the Ferrari world as "resale red!"

No, for me there are lots of other great colors that are a little more incognito. Nothing at all wrong with guards red though. Just dont have a flamboyant enough personality for it I guess... |

Silver. Great color and not really a cop magnet. Used all years I believe.
|
It isn't about liking or disliking red.
It is that no one is paying extra for a red car, because probably 25-30% of them were painted red from the factory. |
Tradional national racing colors; Germany silver, Italy red, USA blue/white, England Green, France blue, etc.
Cars from these countries evolved somehow to look "better" in national racing color. That's why German cars look better silver, while Italians look better red...Brits green, etc.. |

How rare is a plumb Targa? I have never seen one until the car I am looking at. I am suprised but I like it!

I've had the car almost 3 weeks and I'm not kidding I have gotten more comments about it than I get when I drive my other Porsche. The red just stands out, people love the tail, the Fuchs etc. anyway it's a hoot to drive. Wife loves it too. And she likes red. On colors and value. Pin the pic below mine is the silver rs. The green one is a friend if mine. Our cars are nearly identical spec (well they were until a little power update for him) except for color. His would sell for maybe 50-75k more (and possibly a lot more) because of green. And rarity isn't it. Silver is the rarest 997.1rs color. But like my 89, I shopped condition and local before color. And I love it. The silver car gets its fair share of attention (which I hate) but it's from enthusiasts who know what an rs is. The red car just looks cool. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1435555248.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1435555633.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1435555652.jpg |
Here is something rare: it looks like a special order beige cab with very odd looking cloth pinstripe brown sport seats and interior. The person who special ordered this car went all in on beige and brown - back in the day when Miami Vice and bright colors were the rage. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1493318242.JPG

All I know is that you are going to pay allot of extra cash due to the rarity of the color.
Here's examples of premium colors that will command a 20% or more premium (non PTS). Pretty much all the colors I like carry a premium minus Red. 911 SC - Arrow Blue or any pastel from the factory. 911 3.2 - Yellow or Green 964 - Ruby Red or Mint 993 - Riviera Blue |
