A 996tt is probably the only Porsche I would not automatically dismiss because of a tiptronic. Even stock it is that good.

Auto's don't loose boost on upshifts. I would FOR sure buy tiptronic. Plus the more the more I gravitate to autos. They are just quicker 90% of the time.

Stupid advice.

The 996tt is not a drag racing machine.

Yeah, I've seen people drag-race all kinds of stuff.

Riding lawnmowers, etc.

And?

My inclination is to buy a PDK Turbo and use it as a DD.

My opinion on air-cooled has changed 100%, ever since the purchase of the Boxster....

Warning: it's a slippery slope - I went from (3) Boxsters to a 996TT...

That's close to a straight trade if one of the Boxsters is a 987 S.

I was considering an RS edition 987... then noticed a 996TT was the same price and my mind was changed. Not because I think less of Boxsters, but only because of the depreciation I took on my prior Boxsters. I wanted something that would go up in value, and my 996TT has done so in only 9 months of ownership.

In a perfect world, I'd also own a Boxster. Distain for Boxsters is highly irrational. Every time somebody dismisses Boxsters, I agree and say: 'I really wish they made the Cayman in a convertible.' Which shuts them up.

It took me a while to come around to the Boxsters. There may still be one in my future since I ended up "settling" with that coupe.

There is the idea that somehow these are girls' cars, or for hairdressers. Seemingly, any sort of convertible gets this subtext. I'm not sure how any Porsche is labelled effeminate, but that's always in the background. The Boxster, especially the S, is a fun, capable car. They are getting to be cheap enough for college kids to purchase them, but probably not cheap enough for college kids to properly maintain them. But on a Porsche bang for the buck, you can't hardly beat a Boxster. Well, you can, but it would be the 996tt.

This is what kept me from buying a Miata. 'Chick car.' I decided to test drive one 'for fun,' and bought it on the spot.

BEST.CAR.EVER.

The Boxster is also a nice car, but it gets the same 'chick car' label. Don't be afraid of the labels!! Go drive one, they drive nice (not as nice a NC Miata...)

What's a low mile 2001 TT manual coupe worth these days?

996 Turbo Value

$35K to $45K is market value around here for an '01 and if it's an Aero Kit car it may have $3-5K more value.

I spoke to a respectable local Dealeship salesman and he's of the opinion the 996 Turbo values are on the rise.

no need to trip on coolant pipes on daily driven 6TTs.

They are great cars. Fast as hell. They cry for modern suspension, a set of brand name coilovers, little front nose rake, some suspension bits, they are fun.

2nd gear pop up can be avoided if it has not occurred yet.

Water pump will go bad regardless how little miles on it, they are pre-programmed

Foam will come out of the a/c vents and it is at least 12 hours of work.

Soul? It is the connection between you and the car. Some people like old rust buckets, and the misery comes with them, some people like modern era cars and the horrible upkeep they require. Just pick your poison.

Doesn't the chic-car label stem more form how those two cars look rather than how they perform? They both look as if either a Barbie Doll, or Richard Simmons, should be behind the wheel.

I thought only BMW's suffer from that.

How typical of modern car designs where the entire dash needs to be dismantled to replace little motors or brittle insulation in the ventilation system.
