Why is my 74s coupe flared ?

Serial number 9114300699
The car is a serious rust project , but it's an orange coupe which I like. The rear fenders have a slight flare (not wide body) . There are no weld marks at all. Any ideas why ? Maybe some RS relationship ???? Wishful thinking in Lethbridge Alberta .

Thanks, brianvb

If they aren't welded then maybe they are fiber and you just don't see any marks - look for rivets, etc. Are they rusted like the rest of the car? It should be pretty easy to assess from underneath. It will amaze you how well some of those guys grafted fiber flares on some of these cars. Sorry, but this thread is pretty much worthless without photos of the flares in question - and underneath as well.

Maybe they are welded but you are just looking in the wrong place for the welds.

The vin is a 74S. Nothing special there. Someone probably just flared it with sc fenders.

You beat me to it. Probably an entire quarter panel replacement from a later car.

Garage
Although not common back in the 70s, there have always been body guys who have the skills to "butt weld" metal and leave no indication of the alteration. Paint & prep on top and undercoating underneath can make it virtually impossible to detect. Check the lower edge in front of the torsion bar hole and the flange between flare and tail light opening. These are hard to match. If they show no disturbance, it could be - as Matt suggests - a full quarter replacement. That's rarer, but it happens...

It's very very smooth inside the wheel well right up to the window edge . No evidence of mods. It will go on a hoist in a day or 2 and get closer inspection.

I'm feeling like it needs to be a RAT PORSCHE. Fix rust awesome and leave body alone .

Brian. Signal orange. Best color ever.

Could this have been special ordered car? That was my guess. Customer ordered. I'd love to see a coa on that car.
