What's it worth - 74 longhood project

Hey guys,

Looks like many fortunate events have lead to this unfortunate event. I may have to sell my 911 project due to the lack of spare time I have now. Problem is, I have no idea how to price it. The tub is has been media blasted and but is now covered in surface rust but I have have it mediablasted again if one wishes. I have all the body panels for a longhood conversion including the front fenders, non-sunroof skin, longhood, lwb front and rear bumpers with the center panel, front hood latch panel, and a three bar decklid. I am missing the rear fenders but I do have a set of SC flares and the narrow body flares as well. I was looking to purchase full quarter panels with the narrow flares or RS flares. The motor is a freshly rebuilt and blueprinted 2.7RS breathing through PMO's. I purchased the car complete and running and have all the parts minus the interior and should-be-replaced such as brake lines and clutch cable.

So where am I at? I've invested $18k into the car-will I be able to get it back? Or should I just media blast, shoot some primer, and continue the project 40 years from now?

$18k will be a stretch but you might find the right guy to buy it at that. I think it would sell reasonably quickly in the $12-15k range.

The best money, if you are willing to break up a numbers matching car, would be to sell the engine and then sell the chassis seperate. That might get you close to your number. The real catch is the cost to finish the project will put the car at or over what it will be worth finished. Most people are going to be more apt to buy a finished car for the same money.

Too bad it's not a targa. I'm looking for a '74 targa. I would be a player on a targa.

Very good points, however, I don't think I'd ever sell it if it were completed.

Not saying to finish it so that you can sell it. I'm saying that a prospective buyer will do that math. For a sale to be feasible, the potential buyer will have to look at it and feel that they can reach whatever finished car they envision for less than they would pay for that car on the market today. That is unless the guy is looking for a project because he just loves the process of the build. There is an arse for every seat, but your job as a seller is to make the seat fit as many arses as possible to increase your odds of sale.

Part it all out...because it's still parts.

You'd get decent money for the motor. The tub probably around $3-$3.5K. The rest of the longhood parts you would get decent money for no doubt. Even the flares.

Let it go. Part it out, and you'll probably get some good money for everything - especially the motor. I wouldn't be surprised if you got back all your dough if you parted everything and made a list and put it up in the parts section.

Looks like the general consensus is to part it all out. It's just a shame..all the time spent searching for all the parts..keeping usps in business I guess..

If you have no time for it then parting may not be the best way to go. I would first try to sell the whole package . You may not get all the money but you will not be spending hours and days taking pictures, writing ads, answering questions , finding boxes, packaging going to UPS or usps or fed ex - very time consuming which appears to be your reason to sell . if you don't get the offer you are looking for on the whole package then part it out. But once you sell the motor the big egg is gone and you will be still hoping to get back the rest of your money with parts lingering in your garage for years

good luck

I'm going to split Countd and Jeff's advice. Sell everything not original to the car as a part out first. See where you are at with the money and then reassess. Do not split that matching engine from that chassis until you are sure a full part out is your best bet. Usually easier to sell a matched project car than a roller. And you will get nickel and dime on all the small bits. If you can bundle them in a deal as a car in a box it will be much less of your time. List the car and conversion parts at the same time with cross links in case someone does want the whole project.

What's the rust status of the tub besides the surface rust? Is it completely stripped? You state there's no interior what about glass, exterior trim, suspension, wheels, transmission, gauges, wiring harness, oil cooler...? Are the bumpers, hood, fenders, decklid that you have steel or fiberglass?

Pricing...

Since I think many of us are trying to keep up with values, and this is a bit of an odd bird, would you mind posting a selling price, or at least a rough range so we will have an idea?

I know some people like to keep such transactions confidential, but with so many variations on condition (and asking price versus selling price), the selling price of this type of project would be nice to know.

Thanks
