Interesting; I drive and mod the piss out of my "air-cooled", with absolutely no concern for the "portfolio" aspect of it. My 1987 Turbo is the only air-cooled I own and the only 911 I have every owned, and my income is meager (couldn't even dream of buying a car like this with the supposed, current value of it). I don't think that has anything to do with how I view the cars, however, as if I had a more substantial income, I would probably still own only one of them, but I would build a mega-horsepower engine for it (along with other mods that I can't afford to do at the moment).

Smile 911 Turbo Prices

No surprise here- and with the early 911 cars now effectively out of reach for most of us, the '78-' 83 cars are, without a doubt, the next BIG THING.

In the early '80's, with Rothmans' help, PORSCHE showed the world what these cars can do, by attacking and dominating the now legendary DAKAR RALLY.

Just my opinion, but if you can find a good one of these, buy it immediately
like I just did.

I think you may be slightly confused. The 930 had nothing to do with Dakar. In 1984 Porsche entered a Rothman's 953, which was an AWD normally aspirated version of the SC-RS. Following that in 1985 the 959 was entered. All 3 entries got DNFs. Then in 1986 they returned and took 1-2. The 959 had a significant technological contribution to the 964 C4 variants. But a Rothman's 930 in Dakar? Didn't happen.

Listed below #3 Hagerty pricing and he's lowered the price a couple times (I assume because he's not found a buyer and he's motivated to sell).

I went through the same thing a month back selling my '79. The cars have appreciated a lot in the last few years, but the market isn't as "hot" as the value charts might have you believe. There isn't a huge line of people with $100k of cash in hand that are ready to spend it on an old turbo Porsche. IMHO.
Sounds like my car - yes market for 79's has softened up based on my recent experience. I listed car at what Hagerty had for a #3 car thinking it was maybe $10-15k high- I came down lower than I anticipated but someone got a very nice car and I got some $$ to keep my 76 resto going-

Your car sold then, 78/79 cars have a lot unique qualities that collectors look for. Give it time. All these collectors paying big $$$ for 76/77 cars will want a 78/79 car to sitting side by side.

Seems a tatty 930 can be within 25% of a really nice 930 and a true category 1 930 can be worth 2,3 Xs what a nice 930 is worth.

"oh well... time to push back the top of my Boxster and enjoy a beautiful July afternoon drive to the beach"

Do you prefer driving to Rehobeth or P-town with your new toy?

And surely didn't "need" it either. This might sound cliche but I love 930s for far more than there monetary rise. I know several multiple 930 owners that have the same sentiments. I understand this a marketplace forum but I never want to think of my cars as some commodity or stock. They're my hobby and passion, like most of us on here. All air-cooled cars are going up, that's a fact, what you do with them is your decision. I'm driving mine.

I wouldn't say the 3 liter cars and the early 3.3s are completely different but you'll surely never mistake one for the other when driving them back-to-back. They're all wonderful cars, regardless of year.
They are great cars, and you nailed it, a blast to drive, especially the lighter, early ones with no brakes, they are just what I look for in a car, an actual DRIVERS car, not a car that drives you.

Rehobeth?...hmm, interesting choice but I guess it makes sense...listen my disenchanted air cooled friend...ignore all this noise about values and investments and just enjoy whatever puts a smile on your face...build them, then drive the piss out of them...this use to be yOur motto...IMO, this is where the fun still lies..if its worth 2X when you're done playing...well that's just icing on the cake....either way, it's good to see you're still paying attention

Here is a car that is not nearly as nice as the 79 but was bid to $75,101. Shows original paint brings strong bids.

1987 930 122k miles
