Price check for 911 SC
Hi all,
I'm considering jumping into the aircooled Porsche world despite the seemingly large rise in prices. I know somebody who is considering selling his SC. It's in great condition and the CarFax report shows up without problems. Very low miles (just under 30,000), always resided in California, and the condition inside and out is really really nice. The color isn't the ubiquitous red or black, but some kind of dark gray or anthracite color. It sounds like it has the upgraded chain tensioners and pop off valve installed. Given the low miles and very good condition, what do the experts here think this car is worth?? I've seen asking prices for low mile SCs into the $40K+ zone... Thanks in advance for the insights ![]() |

More questions. Model year? Coupe or Targa? Fuchs or other wheels? Records? Original paint/glass? Interior colour? Any mods?

It's an '81 SC Coupe. It has Fuchs wheels. Paint is supposed to be original, and the glass is the sekurit (sp?) originals also. So the exterior color is actually called black metallic but it looks dark gray in sunlight. Interior color is black. Just a few modifications from stock: it has an alarm and aftermarket radio plus frunk CD changer. Records may be a weak link. All records since 2011 (upgraded chain tensioners, pop off valve, oil changes, new starter, new clutch, new windshield seal, new fuel tank). Sounds like the owner's manual includes the california dealer stamp but not much else, so previous records are scarce. CarFax indicates its california history and (low) cumulative miles. |

Ha ha, no ad posted yet! It's not officially on the market, but I think the owner will be a seller quite soon. I'd like to make him an offer that's fair/ competitive before it hits the market, but not sure how high to go.

Still, we need year and model. Color would be good too, along with history and pix, if any.
If you're looking for generalities, I would say the car would trade higher than normal; but I'm sure you want more detail. Us too.

I got the pics of the car in question within the above link. Those were taken in late 2013, but I've seen the car this week and it looks in the same condition. |

WOW! Very nice car! Great color and apparent condition. I would think the car would fall in the upper end of the general consensus range....whatever that is. Good luck with the purchase.

Did they put some kind of carpet om the dash in the pictures? Do the carfax records go all the way back to 82?
Assuming the dash is good, if this car turned out a clean PPI I would say it could trade in the high $30s. Tough to put a price on that unusually low mileage. For a comparison of the high end of the SC market, check the website of the dealer aicauto, they have a well documented black 83 coupe that looks very good on paper, they have it listed at $44k (although it's been sitting for 3 months at that price). A really nice (on paper again, didn't see it in person), two-owner white coupe changed hands at $39k in june here in the northeast apparently. At any rate, if you don't buy it let me know ![]()

Thanks for the comparo from the aicauto site. Looks like a really nice one as well. I prefer the no-spoiler look, but another well kept car on their site. I've been looking at low mileage ones but I may need to consider something with higher miles so the prices aren't so sky high. There was a beautiful dark red one that I bid on through ebay, but I stopped looking once bids got over $44K... Let me see if I can find that one; I'll post a link. |

This is the red SC I bid on, but other bids went over $44K and beyond. Auction ended but no sale? |

A car like this should be able to get $40k in the current market. I agree with the thinking that higher mileage is better. Save $10k and have the money in the bank for refurbishment for things like bushings and brake lines and engine leaks. These things age no matter the mileage.

A higher mile example is probably most rational, but some of these low mile ones look so clean inside and out! |

I've seen cars close to 200k look almost as nice. It just takes a certain kind of owner. Sure, a car like that needs the seats redone. Some guys are scared of a car like that with no engine rebuild but these 3.0s run forever.

Is that a Colorado car? I wouldn't mind a Targa but I prefer a local car I can see in person...
