Help finding value of 74 ENGINE

I got this engine from a friend, who had been keeping it in his garage for 5+ years, with the hopes of building his wife a 911. He called me a couple of years ago and asked if i wanted it, as the price of a clean chassis was now so high that he knew he would never be able to get a complete 911 build done.

My plan was to build a 2.8 twin plug engine for my hotrod 69E (I am by no means a mechanic, but I dreamed of building it alongside a mechanic friend of mine and learning a lot in the process), but I eventually ended up stumbling into a 3.2 SS twin plug engine that worked perfectly and was already done. I had that installed in my car, in addition to a 915 with LSD and the original 901 and 2.0 for my 69 are safely in my garage now.

When I first got this engine, I chatted with my Porsche mechanic friend and he explained how to begin taking the motor apart. I enjoyed the process and carefully removed parts, in line with his instructions. I even managed to get the cams out, after he loaned me the right tool!

Anyway, half way through taking it apart, I found something really strange, so I called him over to the house. One of the valves was stuck open by a washer. I remember how to PO had told me that he got the engine from a shop that had taken this engine out of a customer car and replaced it with a 3.0, as the 2.7 was not running very well. My mechanic friend believed that I "may" have found out why it was not running well. As i have mentioned a few times already, I am not a mechanic, so have no idea what a washer wedging open a valve would do, but I am guessing it would not be good.

So, I took out the washer, continued to take the engine apart and got it down to the minimum. My mechanic friend came over again and looked inside from the bottom and said that the inside of the bottom looked good and best not the split the case at this point. He said it looked clean and no point doing it, until we were sure what was going to be done next. Fast forward a few months, I found the other engine (after driving a 3.2SS in another car and realizing that this would be incredible for my little 69E). The engine has not moved since. All the parts I had are still bagged and organized. The case is still intact.

The reason for my request for guidance is that I once owned a 74 US Carrera (Olive one I sold last year) and I noticed the engine numbers were close. So, after some research, I realized this engine number matched to a 74 Carrera/S 175HP engine, as opposed to the regular 150 HP engine. I also have a very good idea of 74 Carrera values, given the fact that I had just sold one. So, although it is a VERY long shot, I wondered if there is any chance that someone out there has the chassis this came from and may like to reunite the pair?

Engine number is 6340876

There were a couple of things missing when I got the engine. The alternator, fan and a few parts of the CIS were gone. Don't know enough to know exactly, but I know something is missing from the top of the engine that is part of CIS. I do have the correct distributor for it.

Bottom line, (and thanks for any who are still reading this!) I need to get space back in our garage and am looking to send this on to someone who can use it, but I have no idea as to it's value.

Can someone help me get an idea, so I can list here on Pelican?

Much appreciated, as always. This forum is a fountain of knowledge that saves novices like me from making fools of ourselves with asking prices!

As it sits, maybe $2k - if that. If you look in the for sale section a really nice 2.7 with respectable leakdown numbers that was complete and rebuilt went for $4K last week.

The '74 S/Carrera engine is not a special engine, just like the '75 S/Carrera 2.7 engine as they are USA models with CIS and this was the only engine available in '75 anyway. It would only be special if someone was looking for that number.

It's missing the fan which is expensive ($800 at least) and the CIS is gone. A clean, working rebuilt CIS is worth probably double what it was at $1500, as a core not much maybe $300 but yours is not complete.

Honestly I think you may be able to get +/- $1500 for it. I don't think it's worth much more as there has been better complete offerings going for twice this as of late.

Thanks CountD for the feedback. I appreciate it very much. Looks like the pieces removed are pretty expensive to get back!

74 Carrera Engine

Well, I still have this engine in my garage and still not sure what to do with it. Do I just part it (seems I would get more than $1500 for it) or is it worth more selling reasonably complete?

Thanks!

$2k sounds about right...

BTW, if a mechanic sees the washer that was banging around, and suggests not to split the case, well....I would get another mechanic.....

Why would the case need to be split if there was a washer stuck in befween a valve and seat?
Why not just remove the head and inspect the piston crown and bore?

That washer could well be from the CIS intake runner - it's very easy to drop one down the inlet when removing the CIS!
