Another Widebody Value Thread
As some of you know I just bought this car from another Pelican member who is helping a collector liquidate his collection. I'm not trying to flip the car, really just hoping to get my money back out of the car.
1982 ROW Coupe with widebody conversion and rebuilt drivetrain. I sold my 964 coupe to buy this car and planned on making this one my keeper. However......I was very fortunate to stumble across a low mileage original condition 964 C2 Coupe about an hour from my house for a great buy. Although this SC is a hoot to drive, and faster than the 964, the 964 just does everything so well. It is soooooo smooth! I quite honestly didn't realize how good the 964 was until I got back into a G-series car. Not that a G-series is bad, but what a difference between the two! That said, one has to go and I can't bring myself to let go of such a low mileage original 964 C2 coupe............. So, the big question. Can I get $35k back out of this car this time of year? Car has $38k in receipts for mechanical work / maintenance. Rebuilt engine, intake, exhaust, transmission refresh, fresh valve adjust, etc. Does not include the cost of the conversion which was done before previous owner bought the car. Seems like a nice hotrod. Engine and exhaust mods will cut out any California or smog states as potential buyers.... which won't help. 35K won't be easy. Bone stock clean SC would pull that but yours is probably a high 20's car and it probably won't be easy.
The other one may need to go unless you can afford a hit on this one financially. For what it's worth, I like it minus the turbo badge. |
Gorgeous car. I don't believe a car of that quality is hurt by the mods, you just wont get the money back out.
I would estimate mid $25-30k for this time period... I also agree with dumping the turbo script... a nice "911" would look good there or go bare... MattR |
Nice looker - but no heat or AC? Tough sale for many locations IMO.

Thanks guys. I'll stick the car in storage untill spring if I have to. It really is a great car with no expense spared. Wish I could keep both as they serve very different purposes in the stable. "Do I want to thrash around town and make a bunch of noise and wreak havoc on unsuspecting town folk or do I want to cruise around in subtle comfort?" Those are the options I could have if I kept both ;)
That said, I'm not looking for a quick sale where I will lose my a$$ on the car. I figure there must be some guys out there who want a hot rod widebody and may have interest. This all begs the question. What can you expect to get back out of a hot rod build like this? Driver level SC = $20k Body conversion = $15k minimum Mechanicals, seats, electronics = $38k This car is $73k minimum to replicate. $35k is less than 50% (of someone's investment) |

The season does not make a 30 grand car into a 35 grand car. The season may provide a more liquid market but it does not add 5 grand to the price of a car. I can move a car anywhere in the lower 48 for about 700 bucks or less and have it there in a week. The ability to move cars cheaply and quickly smooths out the seasonal curve.
IMO... I think you'll get the $35k out of the car. Might not be over night but I think it will happen. As others have mentioned.... CA buyers are out because of the smog issues. Also HVAC narrows the market even further. AC is not a top priority for me but no heat makes it a tough sale for me. Just my 2 cents.... I really like the car. GLWS |

First you do need to lose that Turbo badge.
Second, who ever did the front seats used some cheese-ball kit. Other than that, I would detail the **** out of it and start high (even above your number) as you can always come down. You'll get the money. Everything sells. |
Thanks for the input guys. I agree that the buying pool is significantly smaller, but the car is a great value at $35k for someone who wants a widebody hotrod to blast around in without spending the $70k to build one (of this caliber) themselves. Hell, the engine and transmission by the time you add parts, carbs, exhaust, labor, etc. have well over $30k in receipts. Someone is buying the upgrades and getting the car for free....... That's my biased view anyway ;)

I understand the heat thing, but that is easy to fix with a set of heat exchangers if the buyer really needed it. I'm in Maine and drove the car this past weekend and wasn't uncomfortable.
As for seats, I have a receipt from previous owner for $2,200 for the sport bolster upgrade and new leather. GTS Classics? I've never heard of them. It looks better in person and the leather is pretty nice. Probably not up to the quality of Autos International, but decent for a nice driver. I hear what you are saying though. My long term plan was to lose the Turbo stuff, go duck tail, and eventually back date! Maybe I'll keep the car and set up a go-fund-me page so that all you wealthy guys can take pride in supporting my habit :) |

Here's my 68S IROC widebody . The conversion was done in 73. It has real RSR 9&11s. The owner raced it for fun at tracks in Riverside,Ontario and Laguna Seca in 74. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1448600551.jpg It sat for 20 yrs.We just spent 6 months to get it in driver condition. We plan to repaint to original color Irish green but keep widebody due to provenance . It is NOT FOR SALE. I guess its value should be 125k $ |
Update: Car sold in less than a week. Had a TON of interest from both eBay and Craigslist. Buying pool may have been small........but even a small buying pool in the air cooled market is big..........
Market may be flooded with guys wanting to buy original condition garage queens for investment purposes, but there are still plenty of us who want to use our cars and want the best bang for buck. This one obviously fit the bill for more than a few guys who were fighting over the car. Sad to see it go. Was really excited about it, and just got it back from the shop with new headers, valve adjustment, and carb tuning. I didn't even get to enjoy it. That said, the 964 C2 that is forcing the sale should bring plenty of joy to me. Only 72,000 miles with a factory remanufactured engine installed 5,000 miles ago due to "excessive oil leaks" per the Porsche dealer work order. Thats it.......no more looking at classifieds for me! I'm too compulsive to allow myself to look. |

Congratulations on the sale! What was the final selling price?
As for the RUFs above, I had a set. Loved the look but they were so dang heavy I couldn't stand them and sold them within a month... Guess my car was just slow though. |
