Interesting color, price is a little crazy

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/898088-1974-911s-salmon-metallic-cork-interior.html

I've never heard of this color before. It looks pretty good in the photos. $44k+ is pretty strong money for a middy with issues and a repaint, isn't it?

We'll see. It's a '74 though.

"middy with issues"?

I think the sellers details list of nick-picky "issues" are pretty minor. Lets remain sane here. Issues are things like rust bubbles, or shoddy body work. Maybe torn leather or broken suspension. He calling his self described list of bits "issues" is way too damning. These bits are minor and not considered deal-breaker issues in my book. He is just covering every detail for our benefit.

I luv the color. Have seen that color over the years & long admired it. I had a mid year 2.7 that I sold about a year ago. Nice car, repainted in chocolate (only a fair repaint). Rebuilt 2.7 (done the right way) with all the good 2.7 updates & upgrades. Nice driving car that really felt like they did when new and a one family ownership with receipts back to the window-sticker.

I sold that car for around thirty, and felt both parties came out well. If this car (a better color) is nearly as good I can see the extra money for it.

It's one of those colors that I think can add 10-20% to the sales price. I've always liked it. High mile car but well tended. I bet he can get close to $40k but not his full asking price.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, if you're going to ask all the money and more for a car, everything should work properly. To an enthusiast with skill in tracking down small issues, those things really don't matter much. But we're talking about a market in which enthusiasts are not the only folks looking at these cars. If I'm a checkbook owner, tracking that stuff down can actually cost real money. The owner being honest about the issues up-front is a plus, but it still doesn't justify the above-market ask.

BTW, I'd love to see that color in person.

Looks like the owner hasn't put any effort into fixing the issues in his 2000 miles of driving.

Its a nice looking car, the color is great. I think thats ALL the money for a good 74. Just reading the add I dont see this as a bad car but as has been mentioned the issues aren't exactly nothing items.

The trans issues are of particular note. This one is a good car to watch to see how strong the market is in my opinion. Superior color is a plus, middie, although they're shedding the old bad rep is still a bit of a minus, repaint to a high standard (?), possible trans issues, a fair number of disclosed issues, and as with any car probably some other issue that bother the next owner. From the pictures the car presents very nicely.

For those reasons this might be a good test of the market.

Nope, unless Im missing something. I sold/traded the car to Mark in a weak moment for a GT40 project a couple years ago. Funny thing, we were friends and he and I actually bid on the 74 via ebay 7-10 years ago and didn't know each wanted the car. I ended up getting the car and restoring it.

Anyhow, Mark pinged me and gave me first right at buying the car a couple days ago which we did. Huge thanks to Mark for agreeing to sell our baby back... cant say enough good things about the guy. Very high level of integrity considering the situation.

David, would you be willing to post more pictures of the car, in different lighting conditions? I've never seen that color in person, and I find it very interesting. And to be completely rude, I am also interested in the final sales price. This is the Marketplace forum after all.

Thanks for sharing the backstory.

Here are a few more pics

I wont post what I paid because its a friend deal. Maybe Mark would be willing to share some of the offers he got, or would be willing to give some data that would help with the Market research.

No need to share on what looks like a great buy.

Thank you for the additional photos, I appreciate it. And the implication that the asking price was higher than the actual selling price. I think even that helps, because cars like this are the ones that or changing value (getting larger) most these days.

I had an offer sight unseen for very close to my asking price within 24 hours. David got a bit of a break from asking price. I agree with Matt's statement that this color may be worth a 10-20% premium, especially given the quality of the paint on this car.

I'm glad for David that he's getting the car back. The fact that he was so anxious to get the car speaks volumes about the actual market value, he knows the condition of the car batter than anyone because he restored it; he knows exactly what the "issues" are and he has that figured into his calculus.
