OK,
Here's an update. It finally stopped raining long enough for me to pull the motor out and take a closer look. I have some photos, but will have to figure out how to post them first. First the mechanicals..as I said, the motor rotates easily by hand, does not make any funny sounds, and does not get stuck anywhere. Carb linkages work smoothly. I pulled all of the plugs. They all looked identical, maybe a little rich, but no oil on any of them. Leakdown was performed, and all cylinders were uniform. Depending on my fiddling, I could get a range of about 7 psi, but that was true for each. The high range for each cylinder was 15-16 %, and I feel comfortable in guaranteeing that nobody would get anything worse. Here as some numbers I pulled off of the motor, parts wise. Case 903781 fan stand 901701 3691 head 901.105.11 0R oil cooler 901.108.101.0R oil breather 901.107.041.02 fan housing 901.108.101.0R If anyone knows of where I can find any other numbers, I'll look. The FG fan shroud needs to be repainted, but looks solid. The clutch and flywheel are there, as is a slightly rough header. I'd assume the intakes are magnesium, because they are much darker metal than the carbs sitting on top of them. Like I said, when I have time to figure out how to post pics, I'll post them too.

Without any pictures, I'm willing to bet that your fan housing number is actually 901.106.101.0R. It's probably the sand cast version which makes the 6 kind of hard to read. That number correlates to the sand cast magnesium fan used in 65 to 67, 250 mm diameter. There was a die-cast magnesium version with the same number that was much easier to read that came after the sand cast version.

Last Solex-equipped 911 engine was 903910.
I think the above posts zeroed in on the correct range of $17-20K for the engine with Webers in core condition.

I'll be working late tonight, but I think I can confirm the numbers on the fan housing.
Thanks, Ron

You're right. It is sand cast, and the number is 901.106.101.0R

Here are some more. I think I'm catching on to this photo-posting stuff.

There are several numbers on the engine worth looking up still.
The build # is stamped below the type # 901/01; for info see here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/100507-third-number-engine-case-2.html That # is particularly useful to me. Also, there are case half date codes under the crank pulley; a ring of dots like hours on a clock give the month of casting on each half. The engine was probably installed in a Feb 1966 delivered car.

Thanks David
The engine was/is kept under another car that is up on a rotisserie. The GT pretty much blocks access when parked in the garage. I didn't want to just sit the GT out in the rain while I dragged the engine out...so, this whole process has taken a while as El Nino has kept things pretty wet.
