72 911T Targa - Ballpark value?

Looking for help establishing a fair offer on a car I'm looking to purchase:

1972 911T Targa
  • Second owner California car w/ 65,xxx miles
  • All original, except for respray of original ocean green color
  • Car is not running and has suspected blown engine
  • Stored inside garage for last 25 years, after engine blew
  • No visible rust. Battery never disconnected, surface corrosion around/under battery
  • Paint and interior in good condition. A few small door dings and 2 small dash cracks.
  • Original Fuch wheels

Sorry, no pictures to share at this point.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Too funny.

To the OP -- what is the story on the car?

Does it belong to the little ole lady whose husband just died?

Why no pictures? You are unlikely to get serious responses with 1 total post and a vague value inquiry.

Yeah, my reply implied the same questions... Without a lot more details it's impossible to give an estimate...

Sorry for the vague post. I was finally able to get some pictures: https://flic.kr/s/aHskvRZQUx

After closer examination, the only rust I could find was under the front left headlight, and the leading edge of the hood from a few small rock chips left unattended. Torsion bar mounts, and other typical problem areas are solid. Battery corrosion seems to be limited to the sheet metal surface, and poking the are under the battery felt solid.

Original color is metallic green (224) which the owner resprayed about 25+ years ago to the closest shade available at the time.

Interior is in good shape. No tears on seats. Two cracks in the dash. Has original blaupnkt AM/FM stereo radio. Equipped with S sport seats. Targa top in good condition, and is water tight.

So.... the big question is the engine, which hasn't been started for over 25 years and is suspected as blown.

Any feedback?

I'd appreciate any input on estimated value. See link in earlier post for photos.

Thanks!

That's a gorgeous car. I think techweenie would know the ballpark on this. Car is very desirable it being a '72 and that color. Awesome car. I just have no idea, but they rarely come up for sale. Sell now as the market is still at the high.

Not that it matters all that much, but from the registration sticker (1982) it looks like the car has been parked for close to 35 years, not 25.

Once the engine has been rebuilt (plus all the other stuff that will need to be overhauled- brakes, gas tank, fuel lines, etc etc) this could be a darn gorgeous car, especially given the sport seats and the color.
Given the current bullish market (will it last? Will it cool down? Noone knows) I would say anything north of 40k would be a huge financial gamble.
I do remember a 73.5T Targa (tangerine) that has been sitting for years but was in comparable condition (sans sport seats) sold for $27k on ebay a few months ago (not mine).

I have the same car. Mine is painted red, and has a 2.7 engine (blown). I just bought a 2.4 engine today ! After I spend another 20 or 30k$ to repaint it to metallic green , redo interior(buy sport seats) and rebuild the 2.4 I'll be good to go and own a 70k$ car.
I think my car is worth 25k$ as is today. It's not for sale.

Thanks for the valuable input. After doing my research, and considering your feedback, I've arrived at a value in the $30-40k range. I've made a reasonable offer to the seller, and I hope he agrees. Fingers crossed.

If you intend on fixing it up, I hope you get it.

You should start a thread on the tech forum to chronicle the rebuild.

I hope not to later read that you bought the car for $20k, got it in your garage and decided it is "too big a project" -- and posted it for sale on ebay!

True dat. But did you see what that S Targa got on Gooding. Holy Moly. If he gets the above car for $20k he's really good to go.

Count, Brian and others, what exactly is "desirable" about that green color? Is it some weird, and/or 70s thing? I ask, because when I see a color like that on a Porsche, or any vehicle for that matter (except maybe a Jeep or farm tractor), I think "ya', it's unusual, butt sure is fugly", and would not even want to buy it, much less pay more.

No offence to those that like it, but am genuinely curious what you guys see in it since gag colors like that (including the various flesh and fecal tones) are always described as worthy of more coin (plus doing a little , naturally).

I think the color is unusual and cool for a '72. But any color would probably be cool for a '72. I would rather have silver more than anything. And browns? I was never a fan of browns, but they are 'vintage' and unusual. My old boss loved his browns - and painted everything from his 912 to his VW bus brown. Is the '72 green worth more? Probably. Because it's a '72 and both the car and color are unusual. But give me silver over anything all day any day.

I got a 404 on the photo link. Too bad the color was changed. Probably worth a bit more than kp.sfo's estimate, but that was a good start, based on the info in the initial post.

Would love to see pics & weigh in...

Broken Link fixed

Sorry for the broken link. The link to the photos in the earlier post is fixed.

I'd appreciate Techweenie's feedback.
