Shipping a Car

Is there any national shipper other than Intercity that I should have quote the move?

TIA.

I've asked quotes to Reliable, which were in line with intercity but I was put off by "pickup some time over the next four weeks"

I have used Reliable (when Intercity didn't cover a certain route) & found them to be very good.

In terms of timescale I think they (Reliable) prefer to give themselves plenty of wiggle room because my "up to four weeks for pick up" turned out to be 6 days.

Don't most transporters put the order out on a system and let the drivers take what they can?

I think the long haul carriers subcontract to local companies for the pick up and delivery in most instances. When they get a full trailer at their metro hub on the route they are running they send off the truck. I can totally see how that coordination can take more than a day or two.

Thanks for all the feedback so far. Keep it coming.

Called him. He doesn't haul through Colorado. Only the southern route through Dallas, Phoenix, and LA.

I personally would not use reliable carriers. I scheduled them to pick up a 930 in Chattanooga TN and deliver it to my shop in Chicago. They told me they could pick up my car in a week. 3 1/2 weeks later they continued to BS me and never picked up the car. In the end I hooked up my own truck and race car trailer and did it myself. They are anything but reliable in my experience.

I think it really depends on your route.

I have used smaller trucking companies without a problem.

It also depends if you are looking for enclosed or open transport.

I had a project car delivered via open ( requested top load) -no problems

I found the smaller companies will charge enclosed rates similar to the large companies open rates.

Post your route and maybe you will get first hand experience for the region.

Just my 2 cents.

Plug :
Go online, look up Central Dispatch,
It is not free, there is a fee involved when you join.
The site allows you to post cars to be picked up, you can check shipping prices and get offers from truckers that are in the areas you wish to ship from / to. You can specify whether you want open or enclosed shipping. All you have to do is read carefully.
Good Luck

Thanks to everyone for your input. A RL member steered me to a local company he has used. It's only marginally less expensive than the big national carriers but I like the idea of working with a local family business. I'll report back once I have the car.

Transport Masters. Always less and usually had car guy driver/owners. From 1 car open or enclosed to 18 wheelers. He personally knows the many usually family owned haulers and always gets it right. Usually from phone call to pick up less than 3 days with delivery on time as contracted for. Just had my 78 930 ( show condition) from Milwaukee to Jacksonville OR ( way off most any ones route) picked up with a really clean mint enclosed trailex 2 car hauler on Tuesday and delivered 5 days later thru the last blizzard. Price was over $500 less than any other bidder ( I do price check every once in awhile). Been using them for close to 15 years with never a problem with quality or price. Owner is Dave 561-482-7789

basically transporters cannot be everwhere. So how it typically works they will say they can pick up your car , take your information, ask for a deposit and then post the car on central dispatch. Central dispatch is a load board for auto transporters. If the car is posted for a decent $$ the car will move. If the car is posted for a cheap $$ the car will sit and you will be giving a lot of excuses, truck broke down, weather, etc. But expect them to ask you for more money. Most people when shipping a car do not know if they are dealing with a carrier or a broker. A carrier is one thats owns the actual equipment to move your car. A broker has a computer and a phone and represents himself as a carrier but owns no trucks.

To check out any carrier or broker

Google

(FMCSA company snapshot )

and enter in companys name or DOT/MC number you will find all the info you need, insurance, bonding, inspections etc

On sites like USHIP they allow all sorts to bid on shipments. A USDOT legal carrier will have a USDOT/Mc number and you can look up there insurance on the FMCSA . A lot of bidders on USHIP are not legal carriers and if they damage your car have fun making a claim. Also the bids on USHIP are increased after a bidder makes a bid. For example if I bid 500 to move your car , my bid will come over USHIP like 650 . Ship makes the difference between 500 and the 650, bidders have no control over this.

Mark
Auto Caddy transport/ Auto caddy transport logistics. I am both a carrier and broker since i cannot be everywhere

If you have questions or concerns on shipping your car give me a ring , more than happy to help a Pelican

Mark is correct, and I would add that USHIP is a nest of vipers.

Your bid price will NOT be honored. The broker game is to tempt you with a good price and guaranteed delivery window and after you commit, then seek a trucker/transporter who will take *their* bid. They will usually not be able to do so, and will start offering higher and higher prices to fulfill their arrangement.

Just to be clear, are intercity and reliable direct owners or do they subcontract the jobs on dispatch?
