it's all a matter of preference. the delta between a speed and a tip is not that significant yet, unless you are talking 599s.

let's just enjoy what we drive and worry less about what other guys think or what the present value is. unless we have an offer on the table, what does it matter anyway?

i'd pay 40-45k for that tip. it looks like a nice car.
Agreed. I've thought about buying one for the wife. She's not really a car girl, but I think a Tip cabriolet would be great for her to blast around town in with the kids......and it gives me another Porsche to drive. I'm afraid she would over rev a manual and/or burn up a clutch too quickly. She doesn't drive my car.......

Shouldn't be about the age of the driver, it should be about what are you going to use the car for. I would hate to commute in traffic with a clutch. If it was my only Porsche it would probably not be a tip. But, out of the two other Porsches we drive, one a five speed, and one a six speed, the tip is the one I like most on the street around town, and on tours. I consider the 993 my "comfort Porsche" sort of like a BMW or a Mercedes for some people. A lot of women also drive tips.

How can you say no to a Tip after watching this?

I had a 73 S Sportomatic many years ago. I loved that car, but grew weary of everybody telling me what a POS it was. The car made many Sporto converts. Last I heard it was in Belgium.

I bought a 95 Tip cab about a year ago. Ive got an 84 Carrera cab sitting next to it. I nearly always grab the keys to the Tip. Probably going to sell the 84 soon. Yea, I'm an old guy...

Why do old fogies with Tips try so hard to convince others that an automatic transmission is the thing to have?!

Not to mention that the OP previously stated why he wanted/needed one (aka- he doesn't need any convincing).

Amazing what a bad wrap Sportos got. My dentist who I had growing up had a SC Sporto and he always apologized for it. Converted it to five-speed.

I never owned a Sporto, but they can't be that bad. It's still a 911.

I'm a part time tip driver and I'm not an "old fogie". I just don't give a s____ what any one else thinks. I am not worried about tarnishing my image because I sometimes drive an automatic Porsche. I wanted a nice cab that I could afford. If I want to shift, and accelerate like a bat out of hell, I jump into my 1904 lb 69 911 with 245 HP and close ratio transmission. I just like driving some kind of Porsche all the time, but don't want to shift all the time.

Sporto is basically a manual with a clutch that engages on its own when you pull the shifter isn't it? To me that sounds weird in a fun and intriguing kind of way. I'd love to try it actually.

The "older crowd" may want a car they can get in and out of....therefore the "older crowd" may give up sports cars....(hopefully not me)

I promised to follow up after the PPI. However I decided to bail on this one before the inspection. It's a very good looking, solid feeling car that might be had in the lower price range for nice 993's, but taking a step back, the additive known (paint match) and unknown (trans, history, etc) issues finally overcame my initial enthusiasm.

Special thanks and kudos to Brian at Zim's Autotechnik for helping me see the light at the last minute (voluntarily opting out of the PPI revenue in the process)

For the record, the seller is one of the most honest, upfront sellers I've encountered and has done a great job of maintaining the car. He promptly returned my deposit without hassle and has now put the car up on eBay. If anyone is interested, PM me for more information on the history. I guess we'll soon have more info on the value.

Porsche 911 Carrera | eBay

Thanks to everyone for the excellent valuation input - and the lively Tip vs. manual dialogue.

The search goes on.......

Ron
