I'm seeing two different terms used which make a good point about perspectives. The OP called his car an asset. These cars are definitely assets. They cost a fair bit of money and what fool wouldn't want to protect the value of his asset. The fact it is an appreciating asset is just a bonus.
Others are talking about an investment. You want to invest in collector cars? Cool. Good for you. Air cooled 911s are penny stocks in the collector car world. Enjoy your hobby. Wax you car and take it to a show twice a year. And put the cover back on it. Different strokes for different folks. I will never stop driving my cars because they are worth more than I paid for them. I insure them. I maintain them. I enjoy driving them. And I'm gonna go do that in a little bit here.

On another note more and more air cooled cars will leave stateside as the world market for air cooled cars grow. Something I think a lot of folks are unaware is going on.

I have a family member, whom was told what my 911s are going for by one of her employees told me that I should sell, I said HELL NO, I like my old cars more than any new one, but she said they are worth so much, my response, "SO"...

Board ate my rant about modding cars. Damn. It was some of my finer work.

It was about how the Marketplace originality puritans are out of touch with Pelican's and 911 owners' roots. 911 owners have modded their cars for the last 50 years. It's the premise of the existence of Pelican arguably more than DIY maintenance. A quick trip to the 911 Tech Forum shows modding these cars is alive and well.
I know of no fewer than 100 911SCs or 3.2 Carreras that have been converted to FIA 3.0, PCA D or E Prod or Spec911 racers in the last 24 months. And the classes continue to grow. Look at Leh Keen's and Pat Long's rally reps. The list goes on. Is someone going to take a pristine low mileage special color car and mod the heck out of it? No. But there are so many bastards like my 74 out there. Just SCs were 58,000 cars made. There's an arse for every seat and $40-50k SCs won't change what has always been part of 911 ownership, personalizing and modifying it to suit. And this is doubly true when the buyer is now someone with a $150-200k GT3 in the garage and first time AC buyer. A guy who paid $10 and has owned it for 20 years is less likely to start modding now. But the new money coming into AC ownership has deeper pockets than a lot of the historical enthusiasts. But they are enthusiasts just the same.

+1 ^^^THIS!
I would add Ferdinand himself would be encouraging us to modify his cars. After all, he built a company that thrived on modifications, and did them all the time!

Special wishes comes to mind. And if they didn't support it there's no way they would have sold Ruf bodies in white and all the other parts to build bespoke hot rods from scratch. Porsche has long given a nod to building their cars into the sports car of your dreams.

Yep - same deal for all high performance cars and motorcycles both past and present; the manufacturers (Porsche, Lambo, Ducati, Aprilia etc., etc., etc.) have always encouraged owners to mod them. Of course, they are trying to sell high performance parts via this "encouragement", butt also, doing so is in keeping with the spirit and nature of high performance machines. |

In my mind taking my 2.7 RS MFI back to 2.4 is ridiculous, but the man with the money makes the rules.

Still here

More relevant is the significant increases in parts and maintenance costs in affecting how people use their cars. I read in another thread replacing an evaporator core in the 993 has gone up 3X in the last few years !! P-car mechanics are charging how much now per hour ?

I have a '74 Yamaha DT350 outside behind the barn holding up the wood pile, without it, the wood pile would fall down, which makes this little Yamy quite an asset.
I paid, $100 and a 1/4 ounce of some stinky Vermont outdoor for it. I could probably get $500 for it if I re-duct tape the seat, make the brakes actually work, and include the vintage sparkle paint helmet with the Budman and Evel Kenevil stickers, so definitely an investment. I'm yet to determine if the "Gas, Grass, or Ass - Nobody Rides for Free" sticker on the rear fender is artificially inflating the value, I know it does with the ladies. Occasionally, I clean out the chipmunk nests, put some fresh fuel in it, and rip it around the field. I don't care how big the Dirty Turkey bubble gets, I will continue to beat the snot out of this little aircooled piece of history.

Same thing in the Turbo forum - the vast majority of the posts have to do with the mods that people are doing (some simple, and some major) . . . every once in a while you see a post from some wiener schnitzel about stock this or that, butt those are few and far between.
