Why are Canadian Porsches so cheap?

Seems they alway have cars listed for 1/2 the cost of anywhere else. I remember a year ago a gentlemen had a 3.0 turbo listed for $30,000 BIN with in 2 days he ended the auction re-listed and got $100,000 BIN. Anyhow seems Canadians just have no idea what their cars can bring at auction.

There is currently a 1982 930 listed in Canada and the seller is asking again 1/2 the cars value..

Guess Porsches are not popular in Canada.

Not 1/2 price, I know of an 80 euro car with an asking price of $70k in the mid-west.

The short answer is the following:
1) Rust concerns
2) Maintenance concerns
3) Import costs
The first is self explanatory. As for the second, because Canada is a very large country with relatively few people (compared to the USA), qualified Porsche specialised mechanics are few and far between. hence the concern about the quality of maintenance and repair work. Finding a Porsche mechanic in Toronto? No problem. How about Saskatchewan? Exactly...
As for import costs, Canada requires that the importer use a state registered import agent when buying a car from canada and bringing it into the USA. Last I checked, they aren't cheap. Then there is the USA customs tax.
Hope that helps...

About a month ago I purchased a car from Canada and it was fairly straightforward. The key is whether the car met U.S. standards or not when it was built. If it did, you don't have to do anything except bring it in. If it didn't, that's where the problems arise and you must use an importer to bring the car up to U.S. standards. That can get very expensive but it's not the Canadians requiring it it's the Americans. The Canadians don't care what leaves their country. The car I bought was built to U.S. standards so a simple letter from General Motors satisfied the requirement.
I got the car cheap because it wasn't running right. It was pretty funny to see an American Border agent pushing the car across the border. LOL

Also, they don't care if the gauges read in kilometers or miles per hour. It's just the DOT and EPA compliance they're worried about. They may also make you clean the underside of the car have any loose dirt to guard against invasive species. They didn't for me but they can force you to do that.

A buyer came from Oregon and bought my 97 C4S here in Victoria BC Canada. Buyer paid for a PPI. Plenty of Porsche specialists here. Flew in and drove it home. No rust and no issues at the border. Duty is 2.5% That is very low compared to Canadians who pay 6.1% duty to import.

Lots of Canadian sellers are trying to cash in. Check autotrader.ca for best selection.

So much misinformation here.

The actual short answer is - CURRENCY.

1 USD = 1.28 CAD right now. You can do the math.

I know the 82 you're talking about and has been for sale for a while.
I have tried to contact the owner a couple of times but little success
Looks OK if I could have a look..

Rust?

Canadian Porsches tend to have pretty good bodies because up here it is normal to only drive them a few months of the year before putting them back in storage. That's been the norm for decades

I don't think there are may cheap Porsches here, if there was I know alot of guys that would be buying them. At a glance they look cheap but when looking into their history, they seem fair priced. The 82 930 for sale isn't necessarily a deal with possible flood history & a repaint and a speedo that stopped working 10 years ago....

Also, many air cooled Porsches i've come across lately were imported into Canada from the USA at somepoint.

I'm not sure where one would get the impression (air cooled) cars are cheap up here. Can you provide a link to these bargain cars?

Air cooled cars for sale up here are few and far between. If anything I would say cars are overpriced. Most people who want one go shopping south of the border.

Puddy is bang on. I just imported. Anything here is an import resale, or rust, or something. Trust me, Canadians know cars! But your right we do live in igloos.
