Do you mean the chassis in oregon is somehow related to your car?

The car was reported in this December '69 Panorama ad as previously stolen.

Maybe we should reserve judgement until the actual facts are brought to the table.

Could have been a payout, recovery, resale that was perfectly legal.

($14 shocks, awesome....)

It's a car with history. Some states don't even title a car that old. A title is just a piece of paper. My 74 is a branded title theft recovery. Means nothing to me. Condition condition condition. People get too worried about records and history on random cars. Not like it's some 10k mi barn find. It's a rough ratty old 67S chassis. Once it's restored title status will mean nothing. I know lots of 356s with S title. Nobody cares when the car itself is done right and is nice. The older they get the less it matters.

Well to me it matters not due to it's history, but rather the legal status of ownership. What happens if you buy this car, put $100K into restoring it, then someone comes along and claims legal ownership due to a theft back in '69?

Not worth the hassle, certainly something to be concerned about...

Hear what you say Matt, but who actually owns it ?

If the existing or a new owner in the future spends a fortune on restoring it and then the original 1969 owner or the insurance company that paid out on it originally then comes forward and claims ownership, someone is looking at a massive loss.

At the current rate of price increases what will a totally restored '67s be worth in 20 years, $500,000, $1 million ?

Its a hell of'a risk

Guys, I'm not saying don't do your homework. You should do your homework on any car. Do a title search. Be sure of the legal status on the car.

Many states don't transfer the S brand from one state to another. Sketchy people have used that to wash titles for decades so the stigma of a branded title comes off the car. Doesn't mean they don't legally own it. Just means they are trying to hide the history.

If you immediately pass on any car with history because of concerns that's your personal choice. I won't judge that. Myself, and many others are still prospective buyers for these cars. Lots of US S title cars have gone back to Europe without the buyer caring. Just be sure the car is what it says it is and is legally owned.

What many people don't realize is that until the last 20 years or so it was very easy in MANY states to retitle a stolen car. In the 1960's and '70's it was very common for people to take a stolen car to someplace like Alabama, Oklahoma and probably 30 other states and get a title.

It's not having a branded title that's the issue...it's the issue that it may have been stolen and retitled. The original owner (or insurance) can come get it and you're out a LOT of money. Best to have any car that old run through the stolen car database

Sounds like a great business plan. I'm going to start stealing cars and sitting on them for 45 or 50 years until they are worth big bucks. And then sell them. Oh wait, I'll be dead...

Of course I know that. Just like everyone in this conversation doesn't want to be part of the food chain, thus the advice to do proper title research on ANY old car you buy.
