Unsolicited Aggressive Offers on Air Cooled. Anyone else seeing these?
Is anyone else being approached by aggressive buyers while out and about with your air cooled 911.? Or is this a So Cal thing?
A young guy yesterday combed through the restaurant I was eating at to find me and offer to buy my car as it was parked outside. Real persistent and would not take "no" for an answer. Just crazy. Similar thing happened last week while driving - a guy pulls up, compliments the car (which happens regularly) and then asks if I want to sell. This guy too was very persistent. My helpful wife said "ok for $$$" and the guy nearly ran us off the road to try and close the deal. Needless to say, I don't need that kind of help from my wife... Luckily, it doesn't happen out here. My wife's 66 Mustang gets a lot more interest.

I always found this annoying when people did this to me. I've had it happen since I started driving, especially when a stranger doesn't take "no" for an answer... and then make you feel like you may get followed home.

Unfortunately goes with the territory since the Air Cooled market has gained so much popularity over the past couple of years.... the Sharks are out and about looking to prey on their next uniformed victim. I'm more worried about the guy who was shooting photos of everyone's license plates at Luftgekuhlt this year.

It happens to me almost every time I drive mine. And I've been driving mine at least 3-4 times a week lately. I thought about putting a "not for sale" sign on mine

Yes, they generally back off when I tell em offers over $50K for my 88 are the only thing that I would consider.

Several times we have had aggressive "gypsies" knock on our door offering to buy air-cooled 911 cars. Even if you give them an over-the-top price, they say they have a buyer. This has been a regular occurrence over the last two years or so. What these guys are doing is trying to flip these cars without any $$$ at stake. They say OK and then when a buyer shows up, he offers half the asking! A big waste of time. My garage door (two Porsche cars inside) stays closed nearly all the time. We now let our Lab have access to the garage when we are not home.

I like when people ask about buying my car -- who knows, I could cash out way ahead of the curve -- that said no one's been aggressive about it with me

I've been asked to pull over for someone to look at my car. I keep driving. The last thing I want is to be carjacked. I politely say no and don't engage them. If they follow, well, I lose them.

I've received some unsolicited offers for my cars over the years. I've never had a problem with it but no one has been overly aggressive with me though. I've also never sold one of my cars this way either. Maybe someday I'll find that crazy buyer with the big checkbook.....
I'm more uncomfortable with strangers asking about the value of one of my cars. It's usually a casual observer that is not a hardcore enthusiast. I'm not insulted because I usually sense it's not their intention to be rude, but more a case of simple curiosity. I typically reply by giving a large price range and explaining that condition, model year and options can make a big difference. My goal is to let these strangers know that not all "collector" cars are out reach financially. How do others deal with this question? |

My response depends on the person. IF they are an arrogant, money is everything, type and ask how much I paid. I politely say, "I'd rather not answer that, It's personal." And let them think whatever number they want. If it's an uneducated person that throws out some ridiculous price, " Oh man this thing is worth $$$$," I correct them in the same way. Miles, original paint, ect make a huge difference on price. But if you know someone willing to pay $$$$ send them my way. Funny story. Just Thursday FedEx drops off a package at the front door. I'm in the garage with the door open. Wife and driver walk down the walk and he's all excited asking a question in broken English/Asian to my wife and she can't figure out what he's saying. I walk over and he's repeating 'Dat wheel, Dat wheel, Dat wheel", and points to the car. I just started laughing and say, "yes it's real." .

Unsolicited offers..? Almost never (lots of Porsches in these neck of the woods).
Having had my garage broken into and tools stolen many years ago I make it a habit to keep the door closed, no one needs to see my stuff.

agreed, it depends on the person. I usually say it's not my car and I don't know anything about it. Also when I drive my 356s, people ask "where is that kit from?" I just go with it. The less they know the better. Every so often you get someone cool who knows his stuff and I'll sit and chat for a min
