Mid-year value?
 

OK, Gents,

I have a question for the collective opinion of the Pelican braintrust on the value of a Mid-Year coupe in today's market.

I'm looking at a 1975 Coupe and was wondering what a reasonable price to pay would be. A few important notes:

• Rust-free, solid body
• Repaint in the attractive original color (sub-par/poor repaint, but a good 5 footer)
• 250K miles on chassis
• 100K on a rebuild of the original 2.7 (upgraded fan, cooling, exhaust, ~no C-tensioners)
• Nice (mostly redone) interior with a nice dash
• 15" Fuchs
• No record of accidents
• Non-sunroof/manual windows
• A/C not functional (surprising, right?)
• Suspension in decent condition
• Trans shifts fine without any noise or syncro crunches
• Runs decent, but doesn't feel particularly strong
• Most everything seems to work

The car has a good number of records and has been serviced by a reputable shop. Overall, the car presents well.

Given that info, what would you expect is a reasonable price to pay for such a car in this market?

$20K at least.

Mid years are a bit odd. Some go for big bucks and other people just aren't interested no matter how good a shape one is in. 1974 has a slight bump in value/appeal because of CA emissions.

A nice one all done is $30k so why pay more than $20k for one that needs paint and engine work with those the miles :eek: and the market is deflating so its not a good time to overpay. I paid $22k for mine with fresh engine rebuild and nice paint/condition. GLWTP

My friend's father sold his 77 coupe this past week. All original, 80k miles, 2-owner, cookie cutters and even set to the U.S. (high ride) spec suspension height still! Has the best fully original pinstripe cloth comfort seats that I've ever seen. They were covered by sheep skins since new. It has not run in over ten years. Desert southwest car it's whole life. I thought it was an $18k ish car. He got over $21k for it.

I spent $25k for my 77 coupe last year. It had 30k mi on fully rebuilt engine, all the necessary 2.7-specific updates, records and 93k documented miles. Bright trim, no a/c, crank windows, sunroof and rear vent windows.

There is a premium for 74-75 due to emissions-exempt in CA.

Yeah, that seems a bit low.

And re-reading my reply, it almost implies that I'm trying to sell it, which I'm not. That link was from 2014 sales ad. It has really great pictures that show the car very well. The difference is amazing between good pictures vs bad/average pictures.

Sold a nice driver condition '77 Targa with 125k miles with a fresh top end rebuild for $32,000 a few months ago. Fully loaded southern car, no rust, and original sport seats with good leather.

LOL! Let me know if you would like to. :) I have an '86 3.2 now but would really like to have a nice middie.

OK, so given the feedback supplied so far, would you guess this to be a $20K car on the low side and a $25K car on the high side? The seller is asking low/mid 30s...

What color is it? When you say it doesn't feel particularly strong, how do you mean?

It's Ice Green Metallic. I've attached a couple of pics below.

As for it not feeling "particularly strong", what I mean is when you put your foot into it, it just doesn't really accelerate or rev as quickly/freely as other 2.7s (and 3.0s) that I've driven. It also has a bit of detonation on acceleration (it still has the stock CIS on it). So, it could be a timing and tune issue or something else. I need to have a compression and leak-down done on it, but need to decide if the pricing makes sense before spending the dollars to have a PPI done by a local shop.

In that condition id peg it at 25-30 depending on the PPI and interior condition.

That's what I was initially thinking as well. However, given the miles on the chassis (250K), the miles/years on the motor rebuild (100K/25), the paint condition (a 5 footer), and the softening market made me question if that was a realistic price range. That's assuming that everything comes back solid on the mechanical review. The interior has front seats that have been redone along with RS carpet and door panels, good dash, decent headliner, but it does have a foggy windshield.

I assume that an exceptional middie coupe is what, $40K at this point? I'm kinda working back from there...

Define exceptional. Before I bought the targa I passed on an alleged two-owner, undocumented, yet very nice coupe which sold for $60k. Maybe now it would trade a bit lower but nowhere near $40k.
