1976 911s Targa Advice

Hello Everyone,

I could use some advice on my 76 Targa. While I had the engine out (doing a reseal) I decided to order the COA to see if the car was numbers matching. Turns out it is. The COA also revealed the original color to be Platinum Metallic, which I knew to be a rare color. Long story short, I did some more research and it turns out it is a Signature Edition car (1 of 200).

My original plan was to put the engine back in and sell the car with the crappy red paint job the car has on it and let someone else restore the body. Now that I know what the car is, does it make more sense for me to have the car repainted to original and then sell the car? I don't have the Ferry Porsche signature steering wheel that was on the car.

Not sure what to do with this one. Any advice?

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,

Restoring the car back to the correct color and trim is going to be a very expensive proposition, and it won't add the value that your probably thinking.

The value of a Ferry Porsche signature edition, like the 1975 Silver Anniversary edition, is completely related to whether the prospective buyer cares about it being an edition or not. Most do not care and even in this market most do not care. It's usually a neat little add-on bonus if people want that color scheme.

Does it have the correct interior and plaid seats? Without the steering wheel you'll have a hard time finding a correct one.

I have a '75 Silver and most people reflecting the sentiment that these 2.7s got in the last few decades, don't care. It's a trim and paint package vs. an performance package.

If I were you I would sell it as-is, because it doesn't make an economic sense to bring it back as of late. Also make sure that your COA is correct.

If anyone is interested, I have a correct signature steering wheel. Any idea what is it worth?

Just curious- what is the correct wheel for the '75 silver anniversary edition? I have the plate on the glovebox, plaid seats and the plaid door cards. The steering wheel appears to be one I have seen in most every midyear though.

Same steering wheel as in every midyear. No changes to the wheel. Also interesting to note that many '75 cars were painted diamond silver metallic and have plaid interiors - but are not Anniversary cars. The dealer may or may not have installed the plaque on the dash, they may have just put in the glovebox or in the owner's manual case, or in some cases kept it themselves. Good thing you have it on the dash so you don't lose it.

I guess it's worth whatever Andy (the OP) will pay you for it. I don't know how desirable it is without the matching car.

The good news is, I found the original wheel today! I knew it was somewhere, just too many parts to look through.
