The owners manual calls for 98 octane. Where do I go? To the airport?

I'd be more concerned about the ethanol than the octane rating.

The car has not been smoked in for more than 30 years. I've been told operational vent wings are rare. You tell me.

Is replacing the motor mounts a DIY?

I have above average skills and the tools, but still amateur, and with this car, zero knowledge base, obviously.

Another important mod will be raising the seat with 1" square steel tubing risers between the floor and the tracks, if that is even possible.

Kind of like this, but this riser is between the seat and the track. You would be surprised how much difference an inch makes. hahahaha, that's what she said.

Motor mounts
 

There are motor mount choices:

OE Supplier for $42 for standard mounts

Meyle for $110 for heavy duty mounts

PORSCHE for $220 for OEM, with a disclaimer of weak welds under stress

I'm inclined to go with Meyle, since I want to drive the piss out of it, respectfully and with purpose. The savings get me a new stainless steel engine carrier mount. I know, save the original.

New motor mounts, hood shocks, deck lid shocks, alternator belt ordered...and so it begins. This post will be the build sheet. I'm using the tech section for specifics. Already got one going on the motor mount change. It's DIY for sure. I really like the red stainless steel carrier, but I'll be conservative for now, leave it stock, assuming it's undamaged.

It's a stated value policy of more than I paid; full comprehensive, full liability, uninsured motorist, towing, zero deductible, backed by USAA. I do realize that a wreck renders it worthless, but it's been wrecked and wrecked again. My brother-in-law is a madman behind the wheel. "Never let the RPM's get below 3,000."

Besides, the car took a five-figure hit on the assessment. We are not talking about a museum piece here, but the car does deserve respect. It will get it from me.

I have already come to grips with it all. I could have left the money in a nice safe investment account and die (not right away) with money in the bank, or I can die (much later) with a smile on my face, having driven the piss out of this red machine for as long as I am able.

That's one way to do it but I would get an agreed value collector policy instead of a stated value policy which has no guarantees as far as I know.

This is where I think a proper assessment of the car's value would help. The five figure hit doesn't sound right.

At 400K miles, I expect some 'wreckage' or two.

You are correct, I was using wrong terminology. It's a pre-approved agreed value on a collector policy underwritten by American Collectors, backed by USAA.

The initial assessment was by a highly recommended and widely respected independent Porsche shop, although he might have been fishing for work a tad when he said the entire interior needed replacing. The list has many DIY's on it and some fatal flaws. Nothing that cannot be fixed with time and money.

A five figure hit is not so bad if it's from $170,000 to $150,000, eh? It's not for sale.
