930 hot rods - why aren't they worth more
Quick question for the Pelican brain trust- why can one build a killer 911 based hot rod and sell it for $200k + but if you hot rod a 930 you can hardly give it away. The 930 already has the big flares & brakes that everyone wants has a superior chassis (RSR based) motor really wakes up to a few bolts on tweaks - should be a slam dunk.

It's because the people willing to spend huge money on Turbos don't actually have any interest in driving them - they want to park them in their garage facilities and brag to their friends that they bought an "unmolested", low mile example of an "iconic" car. Those poor cars might as well have a Briggs and Stratton, 912 engine in them, or a bicycle crank.

People seem to want the period correct twin plug race bred motor & long hood look, which is quite expensive to build correctly. I'm pretty sure fly-hawn put a pretty penny into his M491 build that recently sold.

PNutz, that's where the hotrodding of those cars really works well - change out a few of the less than optimal components (such as the ridiculously late spooling and short on breath turbocharger and the very restrictive, boat anchor of a muffler), and there is much less "wait, wait, wait, wait, boooom"!

It's one of those things that defies reason and logic (maybe the whole classic car hobbie fits that bill, though); it doesn't make any sense to pay more for way less, but that is what many buyers of these cars apparently want. Personally, I much prefer +/-100 additional, more useable horsepower in these things, but the buyers of the big ticket 930s don't seem to give two sharts about the cars' performance. Slap a wooden engine in one, install an odometer rolled back to less than 10K miles, arrange for a COA to show that the car was delivered with the wooden engine, and baam - sell for a quick $200,000 ($500,000 if it was previously owned by a celebrity). Interesting question Phil. I wonder if that would be true if a 930 was modified to replicate a 934.
Personally, I think a bone stock 930 is all the power I could handle. |

Maybe it's because people are turned off by shoddy mods and fear some sort of underlying damage caused by the seller? Not that all hotted up 930s are like this but I'd want to begin with my own starting point. The stock USDM models are fairly unimpressive compared to modern stuff.

Dang Phil you were reading my mind. After the last round of auction debates I was wondering the same thing. RS, Outlaw or Singer inspired clones selling for more than stock unmolested Turbos. Then if you even fix, not modify, one shortcoming of the Turbo the value drops exponentially. I don't get it and have decided to not care. I'm going to fix the AC and exhaust issues Porsche could not in 1979.

I've owned 6 930's - first one was hot rodded 79- all the bolt on mods you could do + a G50 tranny - loved the car hated the color, sold it and bought a 100 % original 79 - nice car but too nice- sold it. Bought another 79 and then a 77- decided I liked the earlier 3.0's better and bought two 76's. Sold the project 76 doing a nut and bolt resto on the other one- will be very mildly modded, love to do more to it but too valuable, it's killing me- first world problem.

$30,000 dollar + rebuilds keep me far far away from the turbo engines. The risk of engine failure is also much higher on a high power turbo motor- it just isn't worth it
