Help from early 911 experts (pricing question)

I am very knowledgeable of the 911SC up to the 993, but don't know much of anything about the early cars. I am looking at a 73T and want opinions. The car is a basic T - no sunroof, crank windows - no options that I can see (exactly what I am looking for). Here is where it gets interesting. The car has an early (69-73) Recaro sport driver seat, a 100 liter gas tank and it has been lowered with what might be upgraded brakes (I need to research more) and although the VIN would indicate it is a 73.5, it does not have CIS but otherwise seems like a stock motor with the typical oils leaks (need leak down). To me it seems like it is an early hot rod. Current owner just acquired and has no knowledge of history or prior owner. It seems very dry and honest. Should I be paying north or south of $50k for this car? I know this is not a lot of info. Any other suggestions for what I should be looking at?

For that kind of money there should be some documentation. The lack of original intake may or may not indicate an original motor. Why is he selling? Is he a flipper or does he have buyer's remorse. Is there a COA or docs on repairs, originality or anything?

If you need help, I am local.

^^thanks I may reach out to you for more info. He is a flipper and no documentation. I am having a hard time figuring out the pricing on these cars - seems all over the place. With so many unknowns, are we talking south of $40?

If its a Ca car and is in good working order, expect to pay over 40k. Why, because if you don't someone else will. If its a rust bucket and looks cobbled together, you might want to look elsewhere unless you want a project. I think any 70-73 car in good working order will be over 40k now even if its a T.

Contact Techweenie on this site. If he doesn't already know the car, he can definitely help with value.
He's the man when it comes to these early cars.

You have a ton of answered questions, and with that you could lose a ton of money if you have no idea what you are looking at.

If you are serious, like someone said, hire Techweenie or someone who can get their hands on the car and actually give it a firm appraisal. You cannot.

Flippers don't care. All they see is an early 911 and they price a #4 car like a #2 car and they think they are all worth big $$$.

You're out of your mind unless you get someone who has specialized knowledge on this. But no matter that an expert like Techweenie says, bet the flipper won't believe any of it and continue his hunt for some sucker.

OP:
There are only about 100 things to look at to determine value. Any photos would cover a lot of those questions... but if you're serious, it needs to be looked at. PM me if you want to discuss. I do charge a couple hundred, but you'll know what you're getting (or not getting).

As an owner of a very original '72 and a previous '73 T targa I can say without a doubt there are too many variables to be able to give you an accurate valuation. Sport seats are being reproduced as are the gas tanks so original parts or repro changes values greatly.
You need to have someone look it over who is very knowledgeable about the early cars. It could be worth more than 50 or less than 40. +1 on techweenie.

Can't value or guess at the value of anything without pics. And the values are all over the place depending on condition especially on these.

If seller's a flipper, expect to hear lies.

Just wanted to close this thread out. After sucking me in to spend time considering this car, the seller disclosed that it has a salvage title. I am not interested and the hunt continues.

Salvage doesn't mean much nowadays. The stigma is pretty much gone on anything early of it's nice. I wouldn't discount it - the real discount could be to you.

Salvage? BFD, a few bucks less. There are stories of million dollar cars built from a panel, frame and a VIN plate....

I may be interested in a salvage at the right price but he wasn't moving lower than $50k. No history and front end collision (why salvaged) were big concerns at that price. I have seen others in same range with clear titles. Thanks for the input everyone, I may circle back with questions on another car.

Well, you either pay his price or wait him out. You still need someone along to look for stuff you aren't up on. Engine and trans numbers would validate what's in the ride. Still no pics.....if you want an opinion you need to provide more information.

Depends. Are you looking for a Concour d' Elegance gem or a nice early driver and what the final bid is. Because it's a driver.....at least it's close and you can go see it.
