SC Targa guy looking at 944 Turbo

Just checking with the 944 Turbo fan club..... I am looking at a very clean 1986 944 Turbo 76k and would like to know what the price range on this might be. Thanks in advance. I am not sure why picture will not show.

I may have one with less than 25,000 miles. A friend will be selling it in the next week or so. Email me at santagrant@gmail. com if you are interested.

Be sure to factor in maintenance costs if you don't plan to do the work yourself. Maintenance records mean a lot with 951's as timing belt jobs, water pumps, etc. can get spendy. Clutch is expensive as well. Can be bargaining power if you plan to do the work yourself. Have an SC targa and a 951 as well, 2 very cool very different cars. 951's are great bang for the buck IMO.

I do most of my Targa work including the clutch. The timing belt work does not look too bad, given some of the YouTube videos I've seen. If an SC clutch is 8 of 10 on difficulty scale, what might be the timing belt task on a 0 to 10 scale.

Thanks!

First of all the clutch on an SC is not an 8 out of 10, but that's a different topic. Timing belt is a 5 out of 10 or less, but like anything on a 951, poor access makes it much harder than it needs to be.

I try to do most of the work on my cars myself but would not want to do a clutch on a 944 turbo myself. The later turbo cars have belt tensioners but they must be tensioned when installed. I have the timing belt and balance belt done on my turbo car as well when the time comes and when the water pump needs replaced that is a different game all together. Working room is pretty sparce in the turbo front. Air cooled and water cooled are 2 different animals in my opinion.

Picked up mine for 12k about 2 years ago, 92k miles and very clean and oriignal, guards red (most common color I believe), with service records from day 1. Immediately did timing belt and water pump, as it had been a while, I think it was a fair price, not a steal but fair. Will need a clutch at some point, new Mexico car so dry as a bone. I'm happy, no regrets at all.

What is the relative difficulty of a clutch on an SC vs 944 belts? I said "if" a clutch is 8 of 10.

I own both an SC as well as a 951 (and 6 other Porsches) and I do all my own work. So I think I am pretty qualified to tell you about working on the cars.

Doing a clutch on an SC is actually a nice job; I'd rate it a 5 out of 10. It is not hard, but as you know, lots of stuff needs to be dissasembled to get the clutch out. I guess the closest thing I would rate the 944 timing belt job to is doing a valve job on the SC - that is a much closer approximation.

- lots of poor access
- job takes 100 times longer because you either are doing it by feel or can't get into where you need to.

The 944 adds to this it's evil nested parts. A hundred things need to be removed in order to get to what you are doing, access is HORRIBLE, and the car in general is hugely unforgiving of mistakes, even small ones. I would like to beat the crap out of the idiots who designed the 951, that's how bad it is to work on

Out of all the cars I own , I hate working on the 951. Actually hate it. And i work on cars probably 6 hours per day, 6 days a week.

When it runs, it runs great and puts a smile on my face. The only thing I have that can out handle it is my '07 997 turbo. It drives that nice.

if you can do an SC clutch, you can do just about anything on a 951 but you will loathe working on it.

Belts are pretty easy, but you just have to remove some stuff to get at them. Depending on age, along with belts come rollers and maybe water pump, just need to take some other stuff off to get at everything. If you can do clutch on an SC (you can drop the motor), you can do anything on a 951. 951 clutch just requires a lot to be taken apart, more labor hours, therefore more expensive at a shop. Lots of good resources out there too, have the patience to understand how it all works and you can work through it. Post some pics!

I have had some pretty cool 911 cars. i now own 6 944 type cars. So much information availible on Rennlist. Such a cool car.. At this point I would say if you could buy at 12K your doing really well. 16K is market for a nice S2 968 or Turbo. The real special ones are in the 30K +
The Rennlist forum with the 944 crowd is cool because everyone does the work themselves

I'd buy an S2 over a 951 personally.

Yum, I've looked at Jeremy's S2 more than once and I'm not even in the market!

Never liked the S2 that much - had 2 of them. Sure it has more power than a 2.5 but it runs rougher. Id take the 951 no doubt!!!! Or even a nice na 2.5.

Edit: the S2 in the link looks horrible and is about 100% overpriced.

Owning a 924 will make a man bitter.
