"Middies" 1974-1977
Can anyone shed some light on weather or not the Middie cars (1974-1977) will be going up in value soon? The longhood 911's are out of sight in price and I can't help but think that these mid-70's cars would be next to move up. I have 2 cars I am looking at for investment/ fun. One is a 1977 911S Targa. All original right down to near perfect silver paint and interior. Original owner and ALL paperwork since new. Even has a rebuilt engine & trans. 68,000 miles since new.
The other is a 1982 911SC Targa. One owner, 60,000 miles. Really nice car. More money than the '77. I just think the older car would make a better candidate for investment. I look forward to your views on this and appreciate your input. Roger |

Middies are great but I don't see them becoming big ticket cars anytime soon

Don't think about them as an investment. I like middies a lot but of those two I'd buy the SC.

The middies have spiked in the last year to year and a half. I prefer the middies to the super Carrera because the middies retain the narrow body. An early middie with chrome trim is perfect in my opinion.

I would always buy the top of the line model of any year so in '74 that would be a ROW Carrera coupe which is financially unobtainable already however the US Carreras which is the next most desireable 911 in '74 can still be found in the 38-50k range. If this is out of range financially then consider a great condition SC as they are second only to the 930. It will be a long while before a '77 targa S appreciates significantly as it's the fifth most disireable car in '77 behind the 1)930 2)ROW Carrera 3.0 coupe 3)ROW Carrera 3.0 targa 4)911 S coupe 5)911 S targa

Depends. Honestly there (and were) not many unmolested, un-flared, un-Miami-viced middles - especially '77s left right now to really matter anyway. They were all hacked up, parted, and played with from these years. Many have different motors, etc.
From a investment, the clean, low-mileage '77 2.7 will win over a SC for investment. Maybe only by a couple thousand but it will. It's a numbers game and a lot less untarnished '77s are out there - a lot less. Depends if you like the narrow body. I do. Depends on if you want to still deal with a 2.7. SC people and 3.0 engine people really don't talk about the Divilar stud issue until one breaks - then they have to take the whole entire engine down. The 3.0 is not a perfect engine. The case is better, but you still have work if small things go wrong. Ending this I would not say I would I have a '75 2.7 S if they were not cheap back years ago. They were really inexpensive. I would have rather had a SC. But a SC was three times the price. Now that things have caught up and the game is closer I still would probably take the SC but the narrow body, chrome trim has really grown on me. Would I sell it for a SC? Maybe, but the SC would have to be just as mechanically sound. Any 911 from 1974-1989 is fine with me. The later years are still nice. They are all nice. They are all awesome cars to me. I would take whatever one had the best paint, best records, and best interior. Year would not matter. |

They both sound like great cars.
I would buy the one you enjoy driving the most. I think the investment potential is about the same between those to cars, leaning to the SC for better appreciation in my view. I look at the middies as the 911 version of a 356B, Porsche comes out with the updated body first and then updates the engine on the latter cars. In todays world it would be better the other way around, the old look with the new engine, since the older look is most prized in vintage cars by todays drivers. |

Outside of the Turbo my guess would be the 74 Carrera. It was Limited Production and one year only body style. "Duck Tail Spoiler" IMO that will be the Middie car collectors will want to own. But I have a feeling all the good original paint & low mileage cars are in collections. Try finding one...

Buy an early Turbo before you can't.... Early 930 Turbo's (1975-1977) were the first super car to use Turbo technology. That incredible bit of history isn't present in the price and they have a ways to run... My own money is in 4 of them and I love all of them.

Not sure the 2002 qualifies as a 'supercar' - but then again, not sure the 1975 930 does either. It was highly desirable and much sought after, and eventually more available, but I'm not sure I can consider it a supercar.\

Pics would be good. But like I said above, you rarely ever find any mid year with that kind of paperwork. Silver is the best color for a mid year Targa. It may be an investment grade mid year, but without photos it's hard to tell.
There is a 1975 Targa on BaT right now. I would follow this to see where it goes. You rarely ever see one that clean either. |

That car is awesome. I have seen it in person. Incredible condition, a time capsule. Is it worth 77k? To someone out there I'd say yes. I've seen people pay $5 for a bottle of water.
