Help with an 88 911sc
I started looking at at air cooled porsches 6-7 years ago and nearly scored a sweet '88 all original with 40k on the clock from a freind of the family for under $25k. It's a long and sad story, but that didn't work out but I was bitten by the bug and watched the used market up to about 2-3 years ago when similar cars were going for $60-70k. I Guess you could say I gave up at those prices
Fast forward to last week.. I called up my old porsche mechanic to say high and visit... guess what he has? An 88' red over black sc in #1 all original condition (except for the radio). Even have original wheel locks. This one has 94k mile and a "whale tail", which I like from the era. It's a 2 owner car (last 28 with one owner) and spent its life in a climate controlled garage in a vacation lake community. No scratches, dents, rock chips remarkably. So, the question is.. how much has the market cooled on these cars. What should I expect to pay for a top condition 88' with 94k miles? I'll try to post some pics later. |

94,000 miles and no rock chips? I seriously doubt the paint on the hood or bumper is original.

I said the same thing, but the paint gage and expert who is a friend and worked on these cars his whole life says differently lol. If it really did spend its life loping around Horseshoe Bay Texas on the weekends, I could believe it... maybe.

Looks nice and honest. It all checks out and it has full history I'd say 40k give or take.
No such thing as an 88 SC though

I'd say $45-50k. That's a nice car.

Red on black (no sexual or race related pun intended) - super classy 80s style. Love it!

I get that. Just calling it a "sunroof coupe" then. I think my friend bought this car based on 2 year ago prices and actually turned down $47k on it last fall. Since he is a mechanic, has been through the car, checked the engine/mechanical stuff, changed brakes/rotors/fluids and I know/trust him... I felt low to mid 40s maybe. I'm troubled at $47k, which is what he wants now. Last fall, he wanted $52k. Thank you for comments and advice.

Better read up. That's an 88 G50 Carrera with the desirable 3.2. Worth more than the earlier SC's.
And move fast. Cars like that don't sit around once on the market. Make sure someone does a full going over first. $47K is a lot of money. G50 coupes are cool cars. Good luck.

We are in a bubble - Anything more than 40 is too much imo.
Good luck! |

The market has softened. 12-18 months ago I would have said $55-60k.

... and that was my friend's thought when he took this car in... but times have changed, which has me back interested in the g50 911. Do you have any opinion on what you would offer/pay for this 88'? I'll add that the clutch was replaced at 88k, the AC works well and compression/leakdown was perfect. No oil leaks at all.

The way I see it, it looks nice enough to take to car shows, qualifies for antique plates/insurance and has enough miles that I won't have to feel bad about driving it. I just have to figure out what is reasonable to pay...?

He'll get $42k for the car quickly if he puts it on the market. Split the kitty with him, move up to $44k and get the deal done.
He's taking less than he wants and you're paying slightly more than the car is worth. In 5 months you won't give a s$*t about the "extra" $2k. Get a very thorough PPI. |

![]() He also picked up a 68t during the market high and is about to finish up a concours level resoration on it. Timing on both cars not good for him and I do feel bad. I really want the 68, but with little kids in the house and a wife that could give 2 ****s about my cars, I think it would be an issue to have something that nice around... though currently have a mclaren 650s spider, 69 camaro ss vert and a shelby gt350 out there now along with some nice bikes. The shelby sits closest to house traffic and sure enough, gets more rash in the garage than out on the street
