I've always liked 914's as well. I grew up on vw's, my first car being a '69 Karmann Ghia with a 2176cc in it. No more Ghia however my dad currently has a 914-6 that I found for him that he enjoys immensely as the original engine sits on a stand and he carves the canyons with a 3.4 liter

you may have been involved w/ my boxer's conversion?

the boxer is a serious Ferrari...I have owned a 911s before and I would not think they are often cross shopped.

If it were me, I'd buy an early 996, budget $10k in improvements, and get a helluva car for $30-35k total; the whole air cooled persona be damned.
have you ever driven a hot rod 930? I tend to think not. my 930 was sportbike fast...don't have a clue where you are finding 190 mph Honda accords?

That looks awesome Adam - I like the look - very authentic. We are expecting our third child any day now, so I cant go that way. I am pretty much in a bind that way.

I am surprised that you are the only American suggesting an US car.

What year is that Mustang? Is it a Fastback?

Damn, Christian has gone full blown breeder. We pulled the plug after number two was born 8 weeks ago.

I have long wanted a 67 fastback mustang. Almost bought a real gt350 for $500 in 1986. Dad vetoed it. Dammit dad!

Guess you didn't read my response to Knee pads.

Hey Adam, cool car! Lord knows how you got a semi restored fastback for $14k tho.

No Turbo needed.
A modern 4 cylinder base Accord goes 0-60 in 8+ seconds.
These old cars leave a that in the dust.

Agreed. 993 RSR and GT2 Evo were the pinnacle. I love the later GT3 Cups but they just aren't in the same league. This is the closest modern rendition I've seen:

I've been seriously considering a 996tt engine for my own '05 supercup.

I bought a 2004 Boxster S. I will admit that they look like baby 911's but the fun factor per dollar is inverse of the 87 911.
Much more fun to drive than my 87 911.
I love the Caymans.
If I only had 1 Porsche, even though IMS failure rates are very low, it is unacceptable to me to have a car that this can happen with. So, the gen 1 Caymans are my favorite car to drive. The caymans and the boosters still have that more raw feel of the old 911's.
The newer 911's are GT cars.
For me, I would buy a 2009 or newer Cayman S.

I concur with all of this - except with the part that Boxsters look like baby 911s.

This conversation is one I've been having over the last few years when the old-911 market took off. I've owned several long and shorthood hotrods, in between various 308s, Corvettes, vintage Mercedes, etc.
Bottom line it's all good--variety is the spice of life. Different rides, different charms. Hell, I'm thinking of selling my Dino for a Royce (something completely different).

It took some dancing. I bought the car on ebay last year for $10,000, had it shipped here, dropped it at a friend's shop and had him go through all the systems. It ran when I got it but had no brakes, bad fuel lines, etc. It now runs great. I added the magnum wheels and painted the Shelby stripes, so it wasn't without work, time, money, and logistics. But I like it.

If I was priced out of air-cooled 911s, I'd probably get a 240Z.

Aside from our two daily drivers and the two Porsches, the 'other' fun cars at home are a 66 Mustang coupe 289 A-Code and a 91 Prelude SI. For quick trips without taking the kids, the Prelude seems to be the go-to car. Kinda surprising.

If I were you I would reduce my car budget and buy a bigger house!
