Thoughts on the Air-cooled Market for 2018
Hmm... do these folks championing datsuns over porsches truely understand how CHEAPLY AND POORLY built early datsuns were???
This is absolute joke. These cars (datsuns) were literally disposable. Only a out and out goon would buy one and that was because he couldn't afford a mustang ect.. I was a kid back when these were new I remember!!! I don't think a lot of these folks chiming in truely know what a disposable car these 240Z were.

Go look at Datsuns racing and rally history in the 60s and 70s before throwing the hairdresser monicker about. |

No one is saying Datsun are better than Porsches, but dude you have to give them a little respect. The Z car (the whole model line) is pretty iconic, persisting even to this day.
I don't own one nor would I buy one but your racial comments about the cars in general are pretty low, man. |

I learned to drive stick on a 280Z, and this is the ironic thing, it belonged to my hairdresser! Cheryl from Shear Pleasure!
But seriously, the Z line is cool, but they aren't Porsches. It's not a fair comparison. ---Adam

You have a targa, does not really count! I was comparing 1971 to 73 240 Z to a 1971-73 911. Are the numbers that far apart? I love my 911 but it did evolve from the Bug.

Yeah, a couple things I have to comment on after reading this explosive thread, so much so it gave me the runs... 1) I would rather have a Pacer or a Gremlin over a 924 Turbo. The Turbo ruined me. I went from a 924 to 924 Turbo in college and then I was over Porsches for decades. It broke me. The 924 Turbo brought me to the brink. It was absolutely the worst designed Porsche ever. They put that truck turbo on a truck engine with that same headgasket and they blew all the time. You could tell that the engineers at Porsche thought the 924 T was complete bulls**t. The regular Audi-engined 924 however was awesome, and it was awesome to me after I owned a 356 and 914. Never ever let me down. Ever. 2) The 240Z is awesome. Many friends had one in Connecticut in my youth. Easy to work on, rusted before your eyes though. They must have made them from recycled tuna cans. I never saw a car rust like a 240Z. But they are awesome and are like a Ferrari 250 GTO in looks. If only the Japanese went with it and continued the breed - I wouldn't have to shake my head at every single cheese ball Nissan with a weed wacker sounding exhaust nowadays. Why do the Japanese blow it every single time when improving a design? Why do they have to change instead of hone a nice piece? They had their chance with a 240Z. It is, and will forever be, the best car they ever made. They had their chance and they made them into bulbous, larger, longer, and more hideous and sinister cars that we have all forgotten. Shame. And I mean in in an Asian type of shame. As far as the aircooled market goes, once all the hoarders and dreamers sell their cars (ie the ones who bought for speculation and the ones who have owned them for a very long time thinking they'll have the time to get it going again - which they will not) sell, then we'll get back to hobbiest reality again. |

Fine slam the 931 but how could ignore the fact porsche made 2 exceptionally good sports cars afterward that simply put no japanese manufacturer could ever come close to in the 1980s ( and they even tried to copy yet again.) The 924 carrera was a truly awesome sports car. Then the 944 turbo which is arguably the finest handling sports car porsche ever made. Those two are direct descendents of the 931 concept. Evolution and form following function.

Heck you can buy a very nice 240Z for $12,000 to $20,000 and that takes care of your sports car desires then it's all good!

One thing I've noticed in many many years of Porsche ownership is that there is a small subset of people who think that because they've bought a thing, they have distinguished and elevated themselves above others.
They have no idea how silly that makes them look to the rest of us. ![]()
