this car was originally sold and titled in Cal... so why would it have to be sold outside of Cal.?
it must have been emissions compliant at time of original sale to a Cal. resident. |

It's clean, I'll say that. But otherwise, I feel like that is so far above what that car is worth... there are a lot of Porsche's I'd own before a 93k 914 with a 1.8. then again, I'm just an enthusiast and not an investor.

Sothebys are complete fools. Unless something has changed that I am not aware of, 1975 does not need emissions testing - at least my '75 S did not require it in San Diego.
1975 is the cut off year. However, I have no idea what this means from California DMV: "Although vehicles 1975 and older are not required to get a smog check, owners of these vehicles must still ensure that their emissions systems are intact." Does it mean that this 914 doesn't have one intact? My car never had an air pump or thermal reactors for 20 years in California - the last owner took them off in the early 1990s. Doesn't matter anyhow. There is no Californian in their right mind that would pay this kind of money for a 914 1.8. |

Monterey pulls in the "really big guns".
When ego and one-upsmanship with unlimited resources are playing, spending $100,000 is like dropping $20 at a gas station. All you need is 2 players and things like this happen. This does no set the bar for the market although all 914 owners would like to believe it does. The same holds true for the other "outliers".

I think that the price is way too high as well, but how many all original, sub 5k miles 914's are out there?

low mileage and old doesn't make a car valuable. I think that's a fallacy that all too often is embraced by buyers at these events.

There is a MUCH nicer '73 914 2.0 for sale in the for sale section. Asking: $23K. Much, much more desirable and nicer than that yellow 1.8.
To me, '73s are the best year. I had a '73 1.7 in yellow. It was my first Porsche. It was cool. Paid $150 for it in 1985. Last edited by SalParadise; 08-25-2017 at 12:18 PM.. |

I think that the value is more tied with the originality than the low mileage. It just happens to go together with this car. I would much rather have a '73 2.0 car, all else being equal.

It bugs me that the auctioned car had AC installed several years after it was purchased, and then several years later it was removed. So it may be very low-miles, but it either has holes in it from the install, or it has replacement panels on it.
I bet the new owner doesn't realize what "AC installed and removed" means... --DD

I bet the new owner was focused on "investment grade" and barely knows what a 914 is.
